The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially named Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Nigeria’s celebrated Shot Put star, as the male captain for Team Nigeria at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.
This announcement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, as Enekwechi steps into a leadership role ahead of the prestigious event.
Enekwechi, a 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist based in the U.S., will co-lead the Nigerian squad with Folashade Oluwafemilayo, a two-time Olympic Champion and the female captain. The duo represents the pinnacle of Nigerian talent, poised to inspire their teammates and fans alike.
At 33 years old, Enekwechi holds several titles, including the current African Champion and the 2019 African Games champion. His experience and dedication to the sport position him as an ideal leader for Team Nigeria, reflecting the NSC’s commitment to excellence in athletics.
The NSC’s Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized the importance of mentorship in selecting Enekwechi and Oluwafemilayo.
He stated that the commission aims to cultivate a clear pathway for young Nigerian athletes to achieve greatness. Olopade highlighted their integrity and dedication, noting that their leadership will inspire the next generation.
“This decision to appoint them as leaders showcases our appreciation for their contributions to Nigeria’s athletic legacy,” Olopade remarked. He connected their roles to the Renewed Hope Agenda for sports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, aiming to elevate Nigeria’s presence on the global stage.
Team Nigeria plans to depart for a three-week training camp in Aberdeen on July 2, 2026, in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which kick off on July 23 in Glasgow.
The athletes are excited about their new Puma apparel, which the NSC will unveil on July 1, 2026, enhancing Team Nigeria’s visibility and spirit during the games.
As anticipation builds for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the leadership of Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Folashade Oluwafemilayo promises to galvanize Team Nigeria, fostering a strong sense of unity and purpose among athletes.
