The National Sports Commission (NSC) has welcomed the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) confirmation that retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu faces no regulatory impediment to serving on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board, renewing calls for fairness and transparency in Nigerian basketball administration.
FIBA Secretary-General Andreas Zagklis conveyed the position in a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to newly elected NBBF President, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha. The letter confirmed Ahmedu as the most senior Nigerian serving on FIBA bodies, noting that he has been a member of the international basketball governing structure since 1997.
The clarification comes days after the NBBF elective congress held on October 15 produced a new board for the 2026–2030 tenure, amid concerns over Ahmedu’s absence from the electoral process.
NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade said FIBA’s position was consistent with concerns he personally raised during the congress, particularly over the non-recognition of Ahmedu in the process.
“Everyone who attended the elective congress in Abuja will recall that I personally questioned why Col. Sam Ahmedu was not recognized as part of the electoral process. I also made my reservations known to the immediate past NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida,” Olopade said.
He stressed that fairness, equity and transparency must underpin efforts to reconcile stakeholders and strengthen sports administration.
“If we must see genuine reconciliations by preaching peace, then fairness, equity and transparency must guide our actions at all times. These are fundamental principles that the Commission upholds in its drive to strengthen sports administration in Nigeria,” he added.
Olopade expressed optimism that FIBA’s clarification would strengthen confidence in the new NBBF leadership and allow the federation to focus on developing basketball across the country.
“Basketball is one of our key sports, and we believe this development will further strengthen the credibility of the new NBBF board and position it to focus on the real task of developing the game, improving its structures and creating greater opportunities for Nigerian players,” he said.
FIBA Clarifies Ahmedu’s Eligibility
In its letter, FIBA congratulated Mustapha and the newly elected board members, welcoming the federation’s stated commitment to good governance and elections conducted in accordance with its constitution and applicable regulations.
The international body also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing NBBF board under Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, a long-standing member of the FIBA Finance Commission.
Ahmedu, who serves as President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, has been involved in international basketball administration for nearly three decades. FIBA’s confirmation establishes that its regulatory framework does not prevent him from serving on the NBBF Board.
The clarification followed a request by the NBBF to the international governing body.
However, confirmation of Ahmedu’s eligibility does not, by itself, establish that he has been formally appointed to the new board. The question of how his eligibility and seniority should be reflected in the board’s composition remains central to the ongoing discussion.
For the NSC, the priority is to ensure that the new administration operates on the principles of fairness, accountability and effective governance.
As the NBBF begins its four-year tenure, the Commission’s intervention adds to calls for a resolution that protects institutional credibility and keeps Nigerian basketball’s development at the centre of the debate.
