The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will burst into life on August 28 with a mouth-watering South-West derby between Shooting Stars and newly promoted Inter Lagos.
The fixture promises an exciting start to the new campaign, with both sides eager to make an early statement when the league gets underway.
Shooting Stars, one of Nigeria’s traditional football clubs, will welcome Inter Lagos to the NPFL in a fixture that immediately puts the newcomers against established opposition.
Inter Lagos earned promotion to the top flight after a successful campaign in the second tier and will now face their first major test of life in the NPFL.
The opening-day clash is among the standout fixtures released following the league’s 2026/27 season draw in Ibadan, where stakeholders also reviewed the recently concluded campaign and outlined priorities for the new season.
The NPFL will enter the new campaign with renewed emphasis on commercial growth, improved club standards, player welfare and stronger matchday experiences.
The league board has also stressed the need for clubs to meet licensing requirements, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, security and medical facilities.
Beyond the opening derby, Matchday One offers several intriguing encounters across the country.
Ikorodu City will host newly promoted Ranchers Bees, while Abia Warriors face Kun Khalifat FC. Barau FC will welcome Nasarawa United, with Bendel Insurance taking on Warri Wolves.
Enugu Rangers will begin against Katsina United, while Rivers United face Plateau United. Kwara United will battle Kano Pillars, and Niger Tornadoes will host Enyimba.
Doma United will complete the opening-day fixtures against Sporting Lagos.
The new season is expected to bring renewed competition for the NPFL title, continental places and survival, with clubs looking to strengthen their squads ahead of the August 28 kick-off.
For 3SC and Inter Lagos, however, the spotlight will be firmly fixed on the opening South-West derby as both teams look to begin the 2026/27 campaign on a winning note.
