Nigerian golfer Godwin Okoko has claimed his maiden Sunshine Development Tour title after producing an impressive final-round performance to win the Rift Valley Championship at Nakuru Golf Club in Kenya on Tuesday.

Okoko finished on 10-under-par 209 after rounds of 75, 66 and 68, edging Kenya’s Simon Njogu by one stroke to win the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing.

The Nigerian sealed the breakthrough victory with a five-under-par 68 in the final round, earning Sh400,000 before tax and 210 Order of Merit points to boost his prospects of progressing to the main Sunshine Tour.

“I’m very happy to win my first title on the Sunshine Development Tour,” Okoko said.

“I’ve been working hard throughout the season, and it feels good to see that effort pay off. The course tested us, but I stayed focused, took my opportunities and kept pushing until the end.”

Okoko Holds His Nerve Under Pressure

Okoko delivered a composed final-round performance, recording six birdies on holes three, four, six, 10, 11 and 17, alongside an eagle on the 16th.

Despite dropping shots on holes five, eight and 12, the Nigerian maintained his composure to finish ahead of the home favourites and secure the biggest victory of his Sunshine Development Tour career.

His triumph marks a significant milestone as he seeks to build momentum and establish himself at a higher level of professional golf.

Njogu Finishes Second as Mudanyi Slips to Third

Kenya’s Simon Njogu finished runner-up on nine-under-par 210 after rounds of 72, 69 and 69, missing out on the title by a single stroke.

Njogu recorded birdies on holes five, eight, 10, 11 and 16 in the final round but dropped shots on holes four and 17. He earned Sh214,000 and 172 Order of Merit points.

“I’m pleased with how I played over the three days. I gave myself opportunities and managed to finish strongly, although there are a few shots I would have liked back,” Njogu said.

“Congratulations to Godwin on the win. I’ll take the positives from this week and build on them as we head into the next tournament.”

Overnight leader Edwin Mudanyi settled for third on three-under-par 213 after rounds of 73, 65 and 75.

Mudanyi endured a difficult start to his final round, dropping shots on holes one, three and four before recovering with a birdie on the sixth. He added two more birdies on the back nine, but consecutive bogeys on holes 14 and 15 ended his hopes of challenging for the title.

He received Sh144,700 for his third-place finish.

Kenyans Dominate Top 10

Kenyan golfers dominated the leaderboard, with Dismas Indiza finishing fourth on 214 after rounds of 71, 71 and 72.

Greg Snow of Muthaiga Golf Club placed fifth on 215, following rounds of 75, 72 and 68, while John Kagiri finished sixth on 218.

Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera shared seventh place on 219 with Kenya’s John Karichu. David Wakhu and Samuel Njoroge tied for ninth on 220, while Elvis Muigua finished 11th on 221.

The championship attracted professional golfers and elite amateurs from across the region, offering participants opportunities to earn prize money and ranking points while advancing their careers.

Professionals competed for Official World Golf Ranking points, while eligible amateurs had the opportunity to earn World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

Okoko Targets Alpha Bravo Golf Classic

Following his breakthrough triumph in Kenya, Okoko is expected to return to Nigeria for the next Sunshine Development Tour event, the Alpha Bravo Golf Classic.

Scheduled for November 18–21, 2026, at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate in Lagos, the tournament will provide the Nigerian with an opportunity to build on his maiden title and continue his pursuit of success on the tour.

Okoko’s victory represents a significant achievement for Nigerian golf, as he looks to turn his East African success into further progress on the Sunshine Development Tour and strengthen his ambitions of reaching the main Sunshine Tour.
