Nigeria Wins Hosting Rights for 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship as Lagos Lands Continental Showpiece

Lagos Nigeria has secured another major continental sporting event after being awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship, sportsbeat.ng reports

Lagos set to welcome Africa’s finest beach volleyball stars in what is expected to be another landmark competition for the country’s growing sports calendar.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja by the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mustapha Berraf, who commended Nigeria’s renewed commitment to sports development, infrastructure and event hosting.

The latest achievement comes just weeks after Nigeria was confirmed as host of the 2027 African School Games, further strengthening the country’s partnership with ANOCA and reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s emerging hubs for international sporting events.

Berraf said Nigeria’s impressive reforms under the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, played a decisive role in the award.

“I want to thank the Federal Government of Nigeria for what it has been doing in sports in recent times. That is why we wasted no time in awarding Nigeria the hosting rights,” Berraf stated.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s successful hosting of the African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta after stepping in at short notice to rescue the event, describing it as proof of the country’s organisational capacity and commitment to developing sports across the continent.

Reacting to the announcement, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko described the hosting rights as another major boost to the Commission’s vision of transforming sports into a key contributor to Nigeria’s economy.

“We are serious about growing the sports economy, and attracting major international competitions remains one of the most effective ways to achieve that objective,” Dikko said.

NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade credited the Federal Government’s unwavering support for the recent influx of hosting opportunities.

According to Olopade, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to sports has provided the platform for Nigeria to compete successfully for major continental events.
Beyond the 2027 championships, ANOCA and the African Union are also considering Nigeria as a potential host for Africa’s Olympic qualification events ahead of the 2030 Olympic Games.

The proposal, if approved, would enable African athletes to compete for Olympic qualification within the continent, significantly reducing the financial burden of travelling to Europe and other regions for qualifying competitions.

With the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship and the African School Games already secured, Nigeria continues to cement its reputation as a preferred destination for international sporting events, a development expected to stimulate tourism, attract investment and accelerate sports development nationwide.
