Nigeria, Ghana Set for Another Showdown as Flying Eagles Face Gruelling WAFU B U-20 Qualifiers Draw
Nigeria and Ghana are set to renew their fierce football rivalry after the Flying Eagles were drawn into a daunting Group B for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The draw, held on Wednesday at the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, paired Nigeria with hosts Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo in what many observers have already labelled the tournament’s toughest group.
The fixture between Nigeria and Ghana is expected to be one of the standout clashes of the qualifiers, with both regional heavyweights battling for a place at the 2027 CAF U-20 AFCON.
Burkina Faso and Togo complete the group and are expected to provide stern opposition, making every match crucial in the race for qualification.
Meanwhile, Group A features Côte d’Ivoire, Benin Republic and Niger Republic.
The championship will bring together all seven member nations of WAFU Zone B, with qualification spots for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations at stake.
Ghana will host the continental finals, adding extra motivation to the competition.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, one of the continent’s most decorated youth teams, will be determined to overcome the difficult draw and secure another appearance at Africa’s premier U-20 tournament.
