Ndidi, Onuachu Lead Nigerian Contingent as Nwaiwu, Uzoho Eye Europa, Conference League Action
Nigerian footballers will be seeking to make their mark across Europe on Thursday as the UEFA Europa League and Conference League continue with another round of league-phase fixtures.
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi headlines the Nigerian contingent in the Europa League, with Beşiktaş facing Scottish champions Celtic in Glasgow, while goalkeeper Francis Uzoho could feature for Omonia against Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.
In the Conference League, Nigerian duo Chibuike Nwaiwu and Paul Onuachu are expected to be involved as Trabzonspor welcome German Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.
However, the availability of some prominent Nigerian players remains uncertain, with injuries and squad-registration issues ruling out or casting doubt over several names initially expected to feature.
Ndidi Leads Nigerian Interest in Europa League
Ndidi will be one of the key players to watch when Beşiktaş travel to Celtic for their Matchday 4 encounter.
The Nigerian midfielder is expected to play an important role in the Turkish side’s midfield, providing defensive cover, physical presence and ball-winning ability against a Celtic team determined to make home advantage count.
Ndidi has already contributed a goal in this season’s competition, scoring in Beşiktaş’ 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on October 22.
Meanwhile, Uzoho could get an opportunity to represent Omonia when the Cypriot side visit NEC Nijmegen. The Nigerian goalkeeper is registered for the competition but has yet to make an appearance in this season’s Europa League, leaving his involvement dependent on the coach’s selection.
Tella, Boniface, Chukwueze Miss Out
The anticipated Nigerian involvement in Bayer Leverkusen’s meeting with Marseille has been affected by fitness and registration concerns.
Nathan Tella is reportedly struggling with a muscular problem, which has placed his availability in doubt ahead of the German club’s encounter against the French side.
Victor Boniface, meanwhile, is not included in Leverkusen’s registered Europa League squad and will not be eligible to feature.
Samuel Chukwueze will also be absent when AC Milan host Ferencváros. The Nigerian winger is recovering from surgery on a torn tendon in his left thigh and is expected to spend an extended period on the sidelines.
Their absence reduces the number of Nigerian players expected to feature in Thursday’s Europa League programme.
Nwaiwu, Onuachu Target Impact Against Freiburg
Attention will also turn to the Conference League, where Trabzonspor host Freiburg in one of the night’s notable fixtures.
Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu and striker Paul Onuachu are both registered for the Turkish club’s European campaign.
Nwaiwu will be looking to strengthen his position in the team with his defensive qualities, while Onuachu’s presence offers Trabzonspor an important attacking option.
The towering striker has already found the net in the competition this season, but questions remain over his fitness ahead of Thursday’s encounter.
Their potential involvement provides another opportunity for Nigerian players to contribute to their clubs’ European ambitions.
