Mexico Beat Ecuador to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 as Hincapié Sees Red

Co-hosts Mexico produced an inspired performance to defeat Ecuador 2-0 and secure a place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ecuador finished the match with 10 men as Piero Hincapié sent off in stoppage time after covering his mouth during a heated exchange, to become the second player to be sent off for violating the prohibition of mouth covering rule during heated argument.

After a one-hour delay caused by severe weather in Mexico City, the packed Mexico City Stadium erupted as El Tri delivered one of their finest World Cup performances in front of 80,824 passionate supporters.

Mexico took the lead in the 22nd minute when Julián Quiñones finished off a swift counterattack after being set up by Roberto Alvarado.

The striker’s clinical finish marked his third goal of the tournament and gave the hosts a deserved advantage.

Veteran forward Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead nine minutes later, rifling home after an assist from Quiñones to cap another flowing attacking move and put Mexico firmly in control before halftime.

Ecuador dominated possession for large spells of the second half in search of a way back into the contest, but Mexico defended resolutely to preserve their clean sheet and seal a memorable victory.

The match ended on a sour note for Ecuador when defender Piero Hincapié was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after appearing to place his hand over the referee’s mouth during a confrontation.

The victory ended Mexico’s run of nine matches without a knockout-stage win at the World Cup and sends them into the last 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between England and DR Congo at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

Despite the weather delay, the electric atmosphere inside the stadium helped inspire Mexico to one of the standout performances of the tournament as they continued their dream of making a deep run on home soil.
