Massive Boost For Super Falcons as CAF Doubles WAFCON 2026 Winner’s Prize Money
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been handed extra motivation ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a record increase in the tournament’s prize money.
CAF confirmed on Wednesday that the champions of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2026 will receive $2 million, doubling the winner’s prize from the previous edition.
The governing body also announced that the tournament’s overall prize fund has increased by 67 per cent, rising from $3.475 million to $5.8 million, underlining its continued commitment to the growth of women’s football across the continent.
The runners-up will receive $750,000, representing a 50 per cent increase, while the third-placed team will earn a prize boosted by 43 per cent.
Each of the 16 participating teams, including defending champions Nigeria, will also receive $150,000 as participation fees, an increase from the $125,000 paid at the last edition.
According to CAF, the winner’s prize has grown by 900 per cent since the current administration took office, increasing from $200,000 to $2 million, while the total tournament prize pool has risen by 495 per cent, from $975,000 to $5.8 million.
The expansion of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations from eight to 16 teams has also been highlighted as another milestone in the competition’s development, providing more nations with the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
The 2026 WAFCON will be held in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, with the Super Falcons aiming to successfully defend their title and win a record-extending 11th African championship.
The enhanced financial package is expected to boost competition, improve investment in women’s football and reward the growing standard of the continent’s premier women’s football tournament.
