Junior D’Tigress Fall Short as Mali Retain FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket Crown
Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress finished as runners-up at the 2026 FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket after suffering a 77-68 defeat to defending champions Mali in Sunday’s final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Nigerian youngsters came into the decisive encounter determined to dethrone Mali and reclaim the continental title, but the defending champions delivered a dominant performance to successfully retain their crown.
Mali seized control from the opening stages and never allowed Nigeria to build enough momentum to mount a comeback.
The West Africans maintained their advantage across the game before sealing a convincing 20-point victory.
The result further underlines Mali’s dominance in the FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket, with the defending champions adding another continental title to their growing collection.
Despite missing out on gold, the Junior D’Tigress enjoyed a strong campaign, reaching the final and securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2027 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China.
Nigeria and Mali earned Africa’s two tickets to next year’s global age-grade championship by reaching the AfroBasket final.
For the Junior D’Tigress, the silver medal represents another encouraging performance on the continental stage and valuable international experience for a promising generation of Nigerian players.
The campaign also provides an important foundation for Nigeria’s future, with several members of the squad capable of progressing through the national team pathway and eventually challenging for places with the senior D’Tigress.
While Mali celebrates another AfroBasket triumph, Nigeria will leave Abidjan as continental runners-up and with a place secured at the 2027 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
