Junior D’Tigress Battle Mali for U18 AfroBasket Glory Today
Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress will face defending champions Mali today, Sunday, August 16, as both sides clash in the final of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The highly anticipated final is scheduled for 10:00am GMT, which is 11:00am Nigerian time, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville.
For Nigeria, the encounter represents another opportunity to end Mali’s long-standing dominance of the competition and secure a first-ever U18 Women’s AfroBasket title.
The Junior D’Tigress booked their place in the final after edging hosts Côte d’Ivoire 53-50 in a tense semi-final.
Favour Joy Anari led Nigeria with 15 points, four assists and five steals, while Nimah Ibidunni produced an impressive performance on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Oluwatobiloba Owolabi also made a significant contribution, scoring 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Mali, meanwhile, secured their place in the final after a hard-fought 57-55 victory over Egypt.
The defending champions are chasing another continental crown and have established themselves as the dominant force in the U18 category.
The final also presents Nigeria with a chance for revenge after Mali defeated the Junior D’Tigress 76-56 in the 2024 final in Pretoria, South Africa.
Both finalists have already secured qualification for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China, but the stakes remain high as they battle for continental supremacy.

Nigeria will need to maintain the defensive intensity that helped them overcome Côte d’Ivoire while limiting turnovers and controlling the defensive boards.
