Heartland Risk Missing Opener Over ₦40.4m Players’ Debt as NNL Reiterates Non Registration of Owing Clubs
By Sportsbeat.ng
Heartland FC risk missing their opening fixture of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season against Crown FC after being listed among five clubs facing outstanding financial obligations arising from decisions of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Players’ Status and Arbitration Committee (PSAC).
The Owerri-based club reportedly owes ₦40.4 million to seven players, placing their participation in the October 31 season opener in doubt as the NNL reiterates its position that clubs with unresolved players’ debts will not be allowed to register players.
Heartland, popularly known as the Naze Millionaires, are scheduled to host Crown FC of Ogbomoso, nicknamed the Ajilete Warriors, in the Conference A curtain-raiser at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
However, failure to comply with the outstanding financial obligations and secure the necessary clearance could jeopardise Heartland’s preparations for the new campaign, including their eligibility to register players.
The NNL has made it clear that compliance with PSAC decisions is mandatory for all affected clubs ahead of the new season.
NNL Chief Operating Officer, Danlami Alanana, warned that clubs that fail to comply with communicated decisions of the committee would not be allowed to register their players.
“All cases of the Players’ Arbitration Committee, whose decisions have been taken and communicated to clubs, must be complied with, or the NNL will not register players of the affected clubs,” Alanana stated.
He further explained that clubs that have reached payment or settlement agreements with players and coaches through the NFF must provide evidence of compliance to the relevant parties and obtain the necessary clearance from the federation.
The directive places pressure on Heartland to resolve their outstanding obligations before the registration process is concluded, with the countdown to their opening fixture already underway.
Five Clubs Face Outstanding Obligations
Heartland are not alone in facing financial pressure, as four other clubs have also been identified with outstanding payments arising from football-related obligations.
Wikki Tourists reportedly owe the NFF ₦2 million, while Lobi Stars have outstanding obligations of ₦52 million and €1,800 to former players and officials Daniel Amokachi and Mika Lonstrom.
Sokoto United owe ₦3.25 million to Okon Otop and Isaac Ali, while Gombe United have an outstanding payment of ₦183,000 to Kazeem Yekini.
The reported obligations highlight the financial and administrative challenges confronting clubs as they prepare for the 2026/2027 season.
NNL Maintains Firm Position
The NNL’s warning signals a firm approach to enforcing decisions made by the NFF’s dispute-resolution body, with player registration serving as the immediate compliance mechanism.
For Heartland, the urgency is heightened by their position as hosts of the season’s opening fixture. Resolving the ₦40.4 million debt and securing clearance could prove crucial to their ability to begin the campaign as scheduled.
The 2026/2027 NNL season is billed to commence on October 31 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, with Heartland’s encounter against Crown FC expected to usher in the new campaign.
Until the outstanding issues are resolved and the necessary clearance obtained, however, the Naze Millionaires face uncertainty over their participation in the eagerly anticipated opener.
