Nigeria continued its impressive outing at the ongoing United World Wrestling (UWW) Ranking Series in Mongolia as Hannah Ojo and Esther Kolawole added more medals to the country’s tally at the Ulaanbaatar Open.
Competing in the women’s 76kg category, Hannah Ojo delivered a strong performance to claim a silver medal for Team Nigeria. Ojo began her campaign with a dominant 10-0 victory over Mongolia’s Tuvshinjargal Tarav before defeating India’s Priya 5-1 in the semi-finals.
However, she settled for silver after suffering an 8-0 defeat to India’s Kajal in the final bout.In the women’s 62kg category.
Esther Kolawole secured a bronze medal after an impressive run that included a stunning 6-0 victory over Russian world number one Amina Tandelova.Kolawole narrowly lost 5-4 to North Korea’s world silver medalist Kim Ok-ju before bouncing back emphatically to defeat China’s Huan Yang 10-0 in the bronze medal match.
The latest medals increased Nigeria’s total haul at the tournament to three after Christianah Ogunsanya earlier won bronze in the women’s 53kg division to secure the country’s first podium finish of the competition.
Team Nigeria, led by national women’s wrestling coach Purity Akuh, featured four wrestlers at the international ranking event as part of preparations for upcoming global championships and the build-up toward the 2028 Olympic
Games.Mercy Genesis also represented Nigeria in the women’s 50kg category during the tournament.The Nigeria Wrestling Federation facilitated the team’s participation in the competition as Nigerian wrestlers continue to chase valuable ranking points on the international stage.
