Gov Eno backs Moses Itauma ahead of Hrgovic IBF heavyweight title fight
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has thrown his weight behind Nigerian-British heavyweight sensation Moses Itauma ahead of his highly anticipated IBF World Heavyweight Championship bout against Filip Hrgovic in London.
Governor Eno expressed his solidarity with Itauma in a special message on Friday, urging the unbeaten heavyweight to represent Akwa Ibom and Nigeria with pride as he steps into the ring for the biggest fight of his professional career.
Itauma, 21, is scheduled to face Croatian contender Hrgovic for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Heavyweight Championship at The O2 Arena in London on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
A victory would place Itauma in the history books as the youngest heavyweight world champion since Mike Tyson, who won his first world heavyweight title at the age of 20 in 1986.
Governor Eno described the occasion as an “epochal moment,” stressing that Itauma has the opportunity to inspire a new generation and further strengthen Nigeria’s presence on the global boxing stage.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, I salute you for carrying the Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence and competitive drive into the world of boxing,” Governor Eno said.
The governor called on Itauma to embrace the magnitude of the occasion and deliver a performance capable of making both Akwa Ibom and Nigeria proud.
He also drew parallels between Itauma’s global boxing ambition and the achievements of Nigerians in other competitive fields, citing wrestler Obafemi “OBA” and internationally acclaimed artistes including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Tems and Rema.
“I urge you to go out there, Eyen Nyin, and show the world that you represent the emerging spirit and passion of the Akwa Ibom Exceptionalism in boxing,” Eno added.
The governor assured Itauma that he would have the backing of Nigerians as he takes on the experienced Hrgovic in a contest carrying significant championship implications.
“Akwa Ibom is arising with you, the nation too, is with you in this moment of national boxing renewal. Go and get it done!” he declared.
Itauma goes into the contest unbeaten and widely regarded as one of the most exciting young heavyweights in world boxing.
Hrgovic, meanwhile, represents a significant step up in opposition as the Croatian brings considerable experience and championship pedigree to the encounter.
For Itauma, Saturday’s showdown is more than another professional bout. It is an opportunity to claim a world title and potentially become the youngest heavyweight champion since the legendary Tyson.
