Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Targets More Medals on Day Two After Historic Six-Medal Opening Day

Team Nigeria will be aiming to sustain its impressive start to the 2026 Commonwealth Games when competition resumes on Saturday, July 25, with athletes set to compete in swimming, 3×3 wheelchair basketball and boxing.

Nigeria enjoyed a remarkable opening day in Glasgow, winning six medals in para powerlifting, three gold and three silver, to finish Day One second on the overall medals table.

The country’s outstanding performance was led by Esther Nworgu, who claimed Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games in the women’s lightweight category.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo produced one of the performances of the day, breaking her own world record twice before securing gold in the women’s heavyweight event, while Riluwan Idris completed the gold rush with victory in the men’s heavyweight class.

Nigeria’s silver medals came through Esther Oyema, Rita Iheanacho Ferdinand, and Dauda Ibrahim, completing a record-breaking opening day for the para powerlifting team.

Attention now shifts to Day Two, with Nigeria represented in three sports.

The morning session begins at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where Abduljabar Adama and Clinton Opute will compete in the men’s 50m freestyle heats.

Collin Obi Ebincha and Adama will also feature in the men’s 100m butterfly heats, while Dorcas Oka takes to the pool in the women’s 100m breaststroke heats as they all chase qualification to the later rounds.

In the evening session, Nigeria’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team opens its Group B campaign against hosts Scotland. The squad comprises Nofisat Adefala, Gbemisola Ijigbamigbe, Chituru Nwaozuzu, and Titilayo Olaleye.

Boxing also resumes for Team Nigeria after a disappointing opening day that saw Ayomide Foly Hassan and Abdulwahab Abdulramon bow out in the Round of 32.

David Akintola will look to keep Nigeria’s hopes alive when he faces his preliminary-round bout in the men’s 80kg division.
