Glasgow 2026: Ogazi’s Historic Gold Leads Nigeria’s Day 9 Medal Haul as Men Relay Delivers
Nigeria enjoyed another memorable day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Samuel Ogazi’s historic gold medal was followed by five more podium finishes, including silver in the men’s 4x100m relay, RuthUsoro in the long jump and bronze medals for Ella Onojuvwevwo, Enku Ekuta and bronze for the mixed relay team.
Ogazi set the tone for a remarkable Day 9 by winning gold in the men’s 400m final, becoming the latest Nigerian athlete to make history at the Games.
The celebrations continued on the track as Nigeria’s women’s 400m representative, Ella Onojuvwevwo, claimed bronze in a time of 51.00 seconds.
Onojuvwevwo’s achievement ended a 32-year wait for Nigeria in the event, making her the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 400m since Fatima Yusuf took silver at the 1994 Games.
There was further success in judo, where Enku Ekuta battled her way to bronze in the women’s -63kg category.
Ekuta recovered from a quarter-final defeat through the repechage before producing a decisive performance in the bronze-medal contest, defeating Zambia’s Rita Kabinda by ippon in less than three minutes.
Nigeria then added another silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay, with the quartet of Favour Ashe, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike clocking a season’s best 38.12 seconds.
Australia won the race in 38.07 seconds, while Canada, who initially crossed ahead of Nigeria, were later disqualified, leaving the Nigerian quartet with the silver medal.
Ruth Usoro added another silver medal to Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games haul after finishing second in the women’s long jump in Glasgow.
Usoro produced a best leap of 6.87m (+2.7m/s) on her opening attempt to secure the silver medal, marking a significant improvement on her sixth-place finish at the previous Commonwealth Games. England’s Jazmin Sawyers claimed gold with a winning jump of 6.93m.
Nigeria signed off their athletics campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal in the mixed 4x400m relay, as Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo combined for a Season’s Best time of 3:12.85.
The quartet finished third behind Jamaica and England, with Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley producing a blistering 48.67-second anchor split to help secure victory.
With more events still to come before the Games conclude, Team Nigeria will be hoping to add further medals to an already impressive haul and finish the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on a high.
