Glasgow 2026: Nigeria’s Swimming Team Finishes Without a Medal as 18 Year Old Abduljabar Adama Signals Bright Future
Nigeria’s swimming campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow ended without a medal, but the performances of 18-year-old Abduljabar Adama have provided optimism for the future of the sport.
The four-member Nigerian swimming team of Abduljabar Adama, Colins Obi Ebingha, Clinton Opute and Dorcas Oka concluded their participation after six days of competition, with Adama producing one of the country’s best-ever performances at the Commonwealth Games.
The teenage sensation reached the men’s 50m butterfly final and finished fifth in a time of 23.32 seconds, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
His remarkable run included winning a swim-off to secure a place in the final, underlining his growing reputation as one of Africa’s most promising young swimmers.
Adama also impressed in the men’s 50m freestyle, reaching the semi-finals before finishing sixth in his race with a time of 22.44 seconds, just outside the qualification places for the final.
Earlier in the Games, he competed in the 100m butterfly, placing seventh in his heat.
Colins Obi Ebingha also enjoyed a memorable campaign by qualifying for the semi-finals of the men’s 50m butterfly alongside Adama after posting a time of 24.01 seconds in the heats.
He later competed in the men’s 100m butterfly but narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals.
Clinton Opute featured in the men’s 200m individual medley, finishing sixth in his heat, while he also came close to reaching the semi-finals of the men’s 50m freestyle after ending the heats as the second reserve.
Dorcas Oka, Nigeria’s only female swimmer at the Games, competed in the women’s 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle but was unable to progress beyond the preliminary rounds against a strong international field.
Although Team Nigeria failed to win a swimming medal in Glasgow, the campaign marked a significant step forward for the country’s aquatic programme.
The qualification of two Nigerian swimmers for the same Commonwealth Games semi-final and Adama’s historic fifth-place finish represent major milestones for Nigerian swimming.
With Adama still only 18 years old, his performances have strengthened hopes that Nigeria can become a genuine contender in future Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic swimming competitions.
While the swimming events have concluded, Team Nigeria remains in action in Glasgow with athletes still competing in athletics, cycling, judo and other events as the Commonwealth Games continue until August 2.
