Nigeria enjoyed another outstanding day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Goodness Nwachukwu shattered her own world record to win the country’s seventh gold medal, while teenage sensation Jessica Oji claimed a historic silver medal in the women’s shot put.
Nwachukwu produced one of the standout performances of the Games in the Women’s F42-44/F61-64 Discus Throw Final.
She launched the discus 39.66m with her final attempt to break her own F42 world record by more than three metres and secure the Commonwealth title.
The Nigerian para-athlete remained composed throughout the competition before delivering her record-breaking throw when it mattered most.

Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye claimed the silver medal with a best throw of 38.52m, while compatriot Bree Cronin took bronze after throwing 36.00m.

Moments later, 19-year-old Jessica Oji announced herself on the international stage with a superb silver medal in the women’s shot put, producing a personal best throw of 17.87m on her Commonwealth Games debut.
The young Nigerian became the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games shot put medal in 20 years, ending a drought that stretched back to Vivian Chukwuemeka’s silver medal at the 2006 Melbourne Games.
Oji displayed impressive composure and consistency throughout the final, underlining her immense potential with a podium finish in her first major international championship for Team Nigeria.
