Nigeria’s difficult outing in the boxing event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Sunday as Ajishola Kadijat became the fourth Nigerian boxer to be eliminated from the tournament.
Competing in the women’s 54kg Round of 16, Kadijat bowed out after a closely fought contest against Wales’ Helen Jones, losing by a narrow 3-2 split decision.
The bout was evenly balanced, with both boxers producing impressive displays throughout.
However, the judges ultimately awarded the victory to Jones, who advanced to the quarter-finals, while Kadijat’s Commonwealth Games campaign came to an end.
Her exit follows the earlier eliminations of Hasan Folly, Abdulwahab Abdul Rahman and David Akintola, further compounding Team Nigeria’s disappointing run in boxing at the Games.
With four boxers now out of contention, Nigeria’s hopes of securing a medal in boxing have suffered another significant setback, leaving the remaining members of the squad with the responsibility of keeping the country’s medal ambitions alive.
Despite the struggles in the ring, Team Nigeria has enjoyed success in other events, particularly para powerlifting, where the country has already secured multiple medals, including gold.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games continue in Glasgow, Scotland, with Team Nigeria aiming to add to its medal tally across several sporting disciplines.
