Emmanuel Ayaosi, David Moses, Samuel Isife and Mubarak Suleiman feature in 2-2 draw against Fenerbahçe, with Ayaosi providing the assist for Slavia’s dramatic equaliser
Four Nigerian footballers shared a landmark European night on Tuesday as Slavia Prague battled back from two goals down to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League.
Emmanuel Ayaosi, David Moses, Samuel Kelechi Isife and Mubarak Suleiman all featured for the Czech side in Istanbul on October 20, marking a significant moment for Nigerian representation in European club football.
The quartet’s involvement in the same Champions League fixture was particularly noteworthy, with Ayaosi and Moses starting the encounter before Isife and Suleiman also entered the action. Their contributions helped underline the growing opportunities available to young Nigerian footballers within established European clubs.
But it was Ayaosi who delivered the defining Nigerian contribution, providing the assist for Slavia Prague’s dramatic late equaliser.
Ayaosi inspires late Slavia comeback
Slavia faced an uphill battle after Fenerbahçe struck twice inside the opening 11 minutes, with Oğuz Aydın opening the scoring in the fourth minute before Mason Greenwood doubled the Turkish side’s advantage.
Lukáš Provod reduced the deficit in the 15th minute to give the visitors renewed hope, although Fenerbahçe retained a 2-1 lead for most of the contest.
With the hosts seemingly on course for victory, Slavia found a late breakthrough in the 90th minute. Ayaosi delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Pavel Kačor reacted sharply to score and rescue a point for the Czech side.
The equaliser completed a remarkable recovery and gave additional significance to Ayaosi’s contribution on a night when four Nigerians represented the same club in Europe’s premier club competition.
According to Slavia Prague’s official match commentary, Ayaosi was also involved in the closing stages as the visitors pushed for a result.
Four Nigerians, one significant milestone
The involvement of Ayaosi, Moses, Isife and Suleiman provides a compelling snapshot of Nigerian talent emerging through European football.
While Nigerian players have enjoyed a long history of participation in European competitions, having four compatriots feature for one club in a single Champions League fixture represents a notable collective achievement.
Their involvement also illustrates the importance of pathways through which young African players can gain exposure to elite European competition, where the demands of tactical discipline, technical quality and consistency provide valuable opportunities for development.
For Slavia Prague, the comeback demonstrated resilience after a difficult start. For the Nigerian quartet, the occasion offered an opportunity to make their presence felt on one of football’s biggest club stages.
A night of drama across Europe
Elsewhere, Liverpool produced another dramatic comeback, recovering from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, while Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz also found the net as Liverpool maintained their winning start to the Champions League league phase. Georges Mikautadze, Sergi Cardona and Tani Oluwaseyi scored for Villarreal.
However, the Nigerian story in Istanbul stood out for its significance beyond the final score: four players from the same country featured for one club on the same Champions League night, with Ayaosi helping deliver a result that Slavia Prague appeared unlikely to secure during the opening stages.
For Nigerian football, it was a reminder that the country’s influence in European football is not limited to established international stars. The next generation is also finding opportunities to compete, contribute and create memorable moments on the continental stage.
