Fleetwood Stun Arsenal on Penalties to Reach EFL Cup Quarter-Finals

League Two side Fleetwood Town produced a stunning upset on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, defeating Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to eliminate the Premier League champions from the EFL Cup at Highbury Stadium.

Fleetwood, who compete in the fourth tier of English football, defied the odds against Arsenal to secure one of the biggest shocks of the competition and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute before Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres equalised for Arsenal shortly after the restart.

Arsenal dominated possession and created more chances, but Fleetwood remained organised and disciplined to force the tie into a penalty shootout.

The Gunners’ hopes of reaching the next round suffered another setback when 16-year-old Max Dowman received a red card in the 86th minute, leaving Arsenal to finish the contest with 10 players.

Fleetwood Triumph in Penalty Shootout

Fleetwood held their nerve from the penalty spot, converting five attempts to win 5-3 and send Arsenal crashing out of the competition.

Ronan Coughlan, Harrison Neal, Will Davies and Andy Cannon were among Fleetwood’s successful penalty takers, while another successful effort completed the hosts’ five-goal tally.

Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Gyökeres converted their penalties for Arsenal, but Bruno Guimarães missed his attempt as Fleetwood sealed a memorable victory.

The result sparked celebrations among the home supporters as the League Two outfit overcame the considerable gap in league status to eliminate one of English football’s biggest clubs.

Arsenal Fall Short Despite Dominance

Arsenal controlled 57 per cent of possession and registered 20 shots compared with Fleetwood’s two. However, only six of the Gunners’ attempts were on target, while the hosts managed two shots on target.

Gyökeres’ equaliser proved insufficient to save Arsenal from elimination, with the visitors unable to find a decisive second goal despite their attacking superiority.

The dismissal of Dowman further complicated Arsenal’s task, allowing Fleetwood to take the contest to penalties and complete their remarkable achievement.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be disappointed with the result as his side suffered an unexpected early exit from the competition.

The Gunners have not won the EFL Cup since 1993, and their wait for another triumph in the competition will continue following this shock defeat.

Bradford City Advance with Victory Over Peterborough

Elsewhere in the EFL Cup fourth round, Bradford City defeated Peterborough United 2-0 to secure their place in the next stage of the competition.

However, the biggest talking point of the night remained Fleetwood’s extraordinary victory over Arsenal, as the fourth-tier club delivered a result that will be remembered by their supporters for years to come.

Fleetwood’s penalty shootout success underlined the unpredictable nature of knockout football, where determination and composure can overcome a significant difference in resources and league standing.
