FIFA World Cup 2026: France overcome stubborn Paraguay, set up quarter-final clash with Morocco

France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay side in their Round of 16 clash at Philadelphia Stadium.
A second-half penalty from captain Kylian Mbappe proved to be the difference as Didier Deschamps’ men finally broke down Paraguay’s stubborn resistance to keep alive their hopes of winning a third FIFA World Cup title.
Paraguay frustrated the two-time world champions throughout a cagey first half, defending with discipline and limiting the French attack to no shots on target before the interval despite France dominating possession.
The South Americans, making their first World Cup appearance since 2010, continued to hold firm after the restart until France gradually increased the pressure.
Their first effort on target arrived in the 54th minute when Manu Kone tested goalkeeper Orlando Gill from distance, but the breakthrough eventually came 20 minutes later.
Substitute Desire Doue injected fresh energy into France’s attack, weaving into the penalty area before being brought down by Diego Gomez. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty.
Mbappe calmly stepped up in the 70th minute, sending Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament and move level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

The goal also took the 27-year-old’s remarkable World Cup tally to 19 goals in just 20 appearances, underlining his status as one of the competition’s greatest performers.

Paraguay pushed for a late equaliser but failed to create enough clear-cut chances against a disciplined French defence as Les Bleus held on to secure victory.

The win sets up a mouthwatering quarter-final showdown between France and Morocco on July 9 in Boston. Morocco advanced after a convincing 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada, becoming the first African nation to reach the last eight at the 2026 tournament.

For Paraguay, the defeat ends an impressive campaign in which they stunned Germany on penalties in the previous round before pushing one of the tournament favourites to the limit.
France will now turn their attention to an unbeaten Moroccan side in what promises to be one of the standout quarter-final fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
