FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Go For Mexico Scalp as Round of 16 Concludes in Morocco Today

Nigeria’s Flamingos will target a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they face Mexico on Thursday, October 29, as the Round of 16 reaches its conclusion in Morocco.

The encounter, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, presents another major test for Hakeem Busari’s side, who are hoping to build on their impressive group-stage finish and keep their title ambitions alive.

Nigeria head into the knockout tie with renewed confidence after defeating defending champions Korea DPR 3-1 in their final group match. The victory followed a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico, helping the Flamingos recover from their opening 2-1 defeat to Poland and finish second in Group B with six points.

Busari Targets History with Flamingos

Busari has expressed his ambition to make a lasting impression at the tournament, revealing that his technical crew has been working to improve the team’s overall performance ahead of the decisive encounter.

“I want to make a name, I want to make a mark for Nigeria and myself. At the moment, we are working on our artistry, working on the team, and we can see our areas of strength and weakness,” Busari said.

The Nigerian coach has also stressed the importance of taking scoring opportunities, warning his players that the knockout stage leaves little room for mistakes.

Mexico, however, will present a difficult challenge after winning two of their three group matches to secure a place in the last 16. The Mexicans defeated Chile and Australia but lost to Spain, finishing second in Group F with six points.

Flamingos Hold Historical Advantage

Nigeria can draw confidence from their previous meeting with Mexico at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where the Flamingos recorded a convincing 3-0 victory.

Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Uchenna Kanu doubled Nigeria’s advantage four minutes later. Aminat Yakubu completed the scoring in the 58th minute.

Although the result offers encouraging historical context, Thursday’s encounter will feature different generations of players, with both teams determined to advance.

The Flamingos will need to combine attacking efficiency with defensive discipline to overcome their opponents and secure a quarter-final berth.

Four Matches to Decide Final Quarter-Finalists

Nigeria’s clash with Mexico is one of four Round of 16 fixtures scheduled for Thursday, with the remaining quarter-final places up for grabs.

China PR will face France alongside the Nigeria-Mexico encounter at 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time, while Japan will take on Kenya at 7:00 p.m. Spain and the United States will contest the final fixture of the day at the same time.

Wednesday’s Round of 16 matches produced victories for Venezuela, Ghana, Brazil and DPR Korea. Venezuela defeated Germany 1-0, Ghana eliminated Argentina on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and Brazil edged Poland 8-7 in a shootout following a 3-3 draw. DPR Korea also recorded a commanding 6-0 victory over hosts Morocco.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for Sunday, November 1.

For Busari and the Flamingos, the immediate priority is to overcome Mexico and move one step closer to the ultimate prize.

A victory would strengthen Nigeria’s hopes of another deep run in a competition where the country has consistently sought to establish itself among the leading teams in women’s youth football.
