D’Tigers Second-Round Opponents Unveiled After Strong Finish to First Phase of 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have confirmed their opponents for the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after ending the opening phase with an impressive campaign.

D’Tigers concluded the first round with a dominant victory over Rwanda to finish with four wins and two defeats, carrying eight points into the next stage of the qualifiers.

The Nigerian side has now been drawn to face South Sudan, Cameroon and Cape Verde in the second round, with all first-round results and points carried over.

Second-Round Standings (Current)

South Sudan – 9 points
Guinea – 9 points
Cameroon – 9 points
Tunisia – 8 points
Nigeria – 8 points
Cape Verde – 7 points

Under the competition format, teams do not play opponents they have already faced in the first round.

Consequently, Nigeria will only take on South Sudan, Cameroon and Cape Verde in home-and-away fixtures during the second round, scheduled to begin in August 2026.

The race for qualification will be highly competitive, with only the top two teams at the end of the second round earning automatic qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

D’Tigers will be aiming to build on their strong finish to the opening phase as they seek a place at the global showpiece.
