D’Tigers Face Stern South Sudan Test After 16-Point Defeat to Cameroon
Nigeria’s D’Tigers will face a stern test against South Sudan today, Friday, August 28, as they seek an immediate response to their disappointing 78-62 defeat to Cameroon in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.
The defeat exposed Nigeria’s struggles offensively, with D’Tigers converting just 19 of 62 field-goal attempts and managing only eight three-pointers from 45 attempts.
Caleb Agada led Nigeria with 13 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Emmanuel Abogidi added 12 points and five rebounds. Ikenna Nwamu contributed 10 points, but the team struggled to establish a consistent offensive rhythm.
Josh Okogie also produced an all-round effort with seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists, although his contribution was not enough to prevent Cameroon from securing a 16-point victory.
South Sudan, meanwhile, enter the encounter with confidence after defeating Guinea 81-71 in their opening game of the window.
The Bright Stars are currently among Africa’s leading basketball nations and boast a roster packed with players who have experience at the highest levels of international and professional basketball.
For D’Tigers, the challenge will be to contain South Sudan’s physicality, athleticism and length while improving dramatically on their shooting efficiency.
Nigeria had previously enjoyed a perfect record against South Sudan in their competitive meetings, but the Bright Stars have developed into a continental powerhouse in recent years.
With the qualifying race tightening, another defeat would leave Nigeria with little margin for error. The top two teams in each second-round group, alongside the best third-placed team, will secure tickets to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
D’Tigers will therefore need a much-improved performance in Radès, Tunisia, when the two sides meet at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès, with tip-off scheduled for 1pm Nigerian time.
After the Cameroon setback, Nigeria’s response against South Sudan could prove crucial to their World Cup qualification ambitions.
