Commonwealth Games Trials: Blessing Ogundiran Claims Fastest Woman Crown

Commonw The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Commonwealth Games Trials delivered thrilling performances on its second day at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. Sprint star Blessing Ogundiran emerged as the new women’s 100m national champion, solidifying her status in Nigerian athletics.

Ogundiran clinched victory in the women’s 100m final, clocking an impressive 11.12 seconds. Her performance extended her unbeaten streak this season and secured the coveted national title.

Fast-rising sprinter Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu closely followed, achieving a personal best of 11.15 seconds to take home the silver medal, while Olajide Olayinka captured bronze with a time of 11.28 seconds.

In the women’s hammer throw, former African champion Oyesade Olatoye showcased her dominance by winning her fifth national title. Olatoye’s impressive throw of 65.05m not only highlighted her skill but also strengthened her case for a successful representation in Team Nigeria at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Chidi Okezie made headlines as he arrived from the United States just a day before the men’s 400m heats. Competing in a solo qualification race, Okezie clocked a solid 48.53 seconds, securing his spot in the semi-finals and keeping his championship hopes alive.

The women’s 400m event set the stage for an exciting final, featuring seasoned athlete Patience Okon-George and emerging talent Aderemi Iyanuoluwa. Okon-George cruised through her semi-final in 52.15 seconds, while Iyanuoluwa delivered a stunning personal best of 51.86 seconds, promising a captivating showdown between experience and youth.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Salami Oseiwe signaled his intent by posting the fastest time across all heats. His impressive clocking of 51.92 seconds ensured a comfortable progression to the next round, sending a strong message to his competitors.

The men’s 100m heats also showcased the talents of Nigeria’s leading sprinters. Former national champion Favour Ashe dominated his heat with a swift 10.25 seconds.

National Sports Festival champion Fakorede Adekalu also secured his place in the next round, finishing in 10.28 seconds. Chidera Nzeakor impressed with a heat-winning performance of 10.26 seconds, while two-time national champion Enoch Adegoke eased to victory in 10.42 seconds, continuing his pursuit of another title.

As the championships progress and places on Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games hang in the balance, spectators can anticipate high-quality performances and fierce competition in Lagos.
