Team Nigeria produced another outstanding performance on Day Four of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning three more gold medals in weightlifting, via Umoafia Didih and Lawal breaking multiple Games records.
Team Nigeria also made a bright start in athletics, and secured a historic victory in women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
The day’s heroics were led by weightlifters Edidiong Joseph Umoafia, Onome Didih, and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who all claimed gold medals in dominant fashion while rewriting the Commonwealth Games record books.
Defending champion Edidiong Joseph Umoafia opened Nigeria’s gold rush in the men’s 71kg category.
The Nigerian lifted a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg, beginning with a record 147kg snatch before adding 172kg in the clean and jerk to hand Nigeria its fourth gold medal of the Games.
The celebrations continued in the women’s 53kg event as Onome Didih produced a remarkable display.
She established a new Games record with a 93kg snatch, followed it with another record of 113kg in the clean and jerk, before finishing with a record total of 206kg.
Her performance comfortably secured gold ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav (199kg) and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx (178kg).
There was no stopping Rafiatu Folashade Lawal in the women’s 58kg division as she successfully defended her Commonwealth title.
Lawal lifted 103kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 229kg, setting Commonwealth Games records in all three categories and finishing 14kg ahead of Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau.
Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish through Eucharia Iyiazi, who claimed bronze in the women’s F57 shot put. Her opening throw of 8.19m proved enough for a medal after she was unable to record another valid attempt.
However, it was disappointment for Adedapo Opadeji, who failed to complete the men’s 79kg weightlifting event after recording a Did Not Finish (DNF).
On the athletics track, Favour Ashe announced his arrival in style by winning his men’s 100m heat in 10.10 seconds, easing off before the finish line to comfortably qualify for the semifinals ahead of Kenya’s Meshack Babu.
Compatriot Nicholas Fakorede also advanced after clocking 10.21 seconds to finish second in his heat behind Lesotho’s Mojela Koneshe, who set a national record of 10.07 seconds.
In the women’s 100m, Miracle Ezechukwu enjoyed a dream Commonwealth Games debut, storming to victory in her heat from lane eight in 11.32 seconds to qualify for the semifinals ahead of Barbados’ Kishawna Niles and Ghana’s Deborah Acheampong.
Nigeria also booked a place in the women’s hammer throw final through Sade Olatoye, whose best effort of 62.75m secured a top-10 finish in Group A and qualification for the final.
There was more good news in the women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball event as Team Nigeria recorded its first victory of the Games.
Trailing India by two points with less than two minutes remaining, the Nigerians staged a spirited comeback to claim a dramatic 7-6 win.
The impressive performances across weightlifting, athletics and wheelchair basketball further strengthened Team Nigeria’s medal push as the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games gather momentum, with hopes high for more podium finishes in the days ahead.
