Chess Olympiad: Nigeria’s Men Face Malawi Test as Women Target Czech Republic After Mixed Start

Nigeria’s men and women chess teams will return to action on Sunday at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with both sides seeking to strengthen their campaigns after four rounds of contrasting results.

The Nigerian women have accumulated five match points from two wins, one draw and one defeat, while the men have four points from two victories and two losses as the 11-round Swiss-system competition gathers momentum.

Nigeria’s campaign has already produced a mixture of impressive wins, difficult setbacks and encouraging individual performances.

Men Bounce Back Against Saudi Arabia

The Nigerian men recovered from their Round Two defeat to Kazakhstan by edging Saudi Arabia 2½-1½ in Round Three.

Odey Goodness Ekunke, rated 2280, provided the decisive result on Board Four, defeating Saudi Arabia’s Emad Khayat, rated 1939, to seal the narrow victory after the opening three boards ended in draws.

Bomo Lovet Kigigha (2287) drew with Ahmed Abdullah Alrehaili (2106), while Abdulraheem Abdulrahman Akintoye (2316) shared the point with Mohammed Dhaidan Alotaibi (1868).

Odion Aikhoje (2246) also held Yazeed Alshnaiber (1866), leaving Ekunke’s victory as the difference between the two teams.

The result was an important response for Nigeria following the 3½-½ defeat to Kazakhstan, coming after the team had opened the Olympiad with a commanding 4-0 victory over New Caledonia.

However, the men were unable to maintain that momentum in Round Four, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Cuba.

Aikhoje and Ekunke remain among Nigeria’s leading individual performers, with both players on 2½ points from four games.

Women Fight Back Against Mozambique

The Nigerian women produced one of the most notable comebacks of their opening rounds when they recovered from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with Mozambique.

Deborah Ebimobo-ere Quickpen was beaten by Vania Fausto Da T. Vilhete, while Iyefu Joy Onoja also lost to Cheila Andre Sitoe, leaving Mozambique in control.

Nigeria responded through Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo, who defeated Neusa Aridas De Castro, before Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi completed the comeback with victory over Theodora Efentakis.

The women subsequently carried that fighting spirit into Round Four, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 after opening the competition with a 4-0 victory over Mali and suffering a 3½-½ loss to England in Round Two.

Nwankwo has emerged as Nigeria’s standout performer so far, collecting 3½ points from four games. She has won three games and drawn one.

Omoruyi has also contributed strongly with three points from four games, while Quickpen has two points.

The latest results have given the women five match points and placed them in a position to build on their positive start as the tournament progresses.

Round Five Tests Await

The Nigerian men will face Malawi in Round Five at 3 p.m. Sunday in Samarkand.

Both teams enter the encounter with four match points, setting up another important contest for Nigeria as it looks to recover from the defeat to Cuba and return to winning ways.

The women face an equally demanding assignment against the Czech Republic, who also have five match points after four rounds.

The 3 p.m. encounter will provide another opportunity for Nigeria to convert its strong individual performances into another team victory.

With seven rounds still to play, the early results have underlined both teams’ capacity to respond to setbacks. The women will look to Nwankwo and Omoruyi to maintain their strong form, while the men will hope Aikhoje, Ekunke and the rest of the lineup can reproduce the collective resilience that delivered victories over New Caledonia and Saudi Arabia.

The next round offers Nigeria another opportunity to build momentum as the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad enters a crucial phase.
