Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet: All Set as Nigerian Stars Boost Competition with Cash Prizes, Performance Bonuses

The stage is set for the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet as Nigerian athletics stars rally behind the competition with substantial cash prizes, performance bonuses and technical support aimed at rewarding excellence and encouraging the next generation of athletes.

Scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, the anniversary meet will feature several track and field events, with established Nigerian internationals committing financial resources to make the competition more rewarding for participants.

Held under the theme, “10 Years of Impact. A Legacy That Keeps Running,” the event will celebrate a decade of Athletic Heat’s contribution to promoting athletics and providing visibility for Nigerian and African athletes.

Among the leading contributors is two-time Olympian and African shot put record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who has committed ₦950,000 in prize money to the men’s shot put. The winner will receive ₦400,000, while the second, third and fourth-place finishers will earn ₦300,000, ₦150,000 and ₦100,000 respectively.

Commonwealth Games champion and Nigerian 400m hurdles record holder Nathaniel Ezekiel has also committed ₦500,000 to the men’s 400m hurdles, with an additional ₦250,000 performance bonus available to any athlete who runs under 51 seconds.

Nigerian international Edidiong Udo has pledged ₦200,000 in performance bonuses for the men’s and women’s 800m races. Female athletes who run faster than 2:07 and male competitors who break 1:52 will qualify for the incentive, irrespective of their finishing positions.

The field events have attracted further support from Nigeria’s leading athletes. National high jump record holder Temitope Adeshina is sponsoring the women’s high jump with ₦200,000 for the top four finishers, while national discus champion Ebubechukwu Vincent Ugwoke has committed ₦575,000 to the men’s discus.

Nigerian international Kosi Umerah has also pledged ₦500,000 for the women’s hammer throw, alongside a technical development initiative that will provide participating athletes with individual video analysis, feedback on throwing mechanics and training recommendations.

Beyond the financial incentives, Athletic Heat has appointed experienced athletics coach Felix Onoriode as chaperone for the Under-11 and Under-15 categories, reinforcing the competition’s commitment to youth development and athlete welfare.

The growing support from established Nigerian athletes highlights the increasing importance of athlete-led investment in grassroots athletics, particularly in providing emerging competitors with opportunities to earn financial rewards and gain valuable competition experience.

Athletic Heat CEO Ese Oguma has welcomed the interventions, describing them as significant contributions to the anniversary celebration and the organisation’s broader commitment to developing the sport.

With substantial prize money across several disciplines, additional performance incentives and technical support for emerging talents, the November 7 competition promises to be a major celebration of athletics and a fitting marker of Athletic Heat’s 10-year journey.
