Atewogboye Explains Vision Behind Lagos Street Soccer Season 2 as Oshodi Tournament Kicks Off
The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Grassroots Sports, Adebanji Atewogboye, popularly known as SKIBANJ, has outlined the vision behind the Lagos Street Soccer Stars Season 2.
He described the competition as a platform to discover hidden football talents, engage youths positively and promote social development.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Oshodi edition on Sunday, Atewogboye said the initiative is part of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to grassroots sports development under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The tournament, themed “Oshodi Hidden Talents,” officially got underway with 32 teams receiving playing kits ahead of the two-week knockout competition, where participants will compete for over ₦5 million worth of prizes and other consolation rewards.
According to Atewogboye, the competition is more than just football, as it aims to create opportunities for talented youngsters who may otherwise go unnoticed.
“This programme started last year to identify hidden talents, give them structure and provide a pathway for them to develop. It also demonstrates that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is investing in the dreams of young people across Lagos State,” he said.
He added that the initiative is designed to keep youths away from crime and social vices by providing a positive platform to showcase their football abilities while receiving mentorship and education.
As part of the opening ceremony, officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) sensitised players and residents on the dangers of drug abuse, urging participants to stay away from hard drugs to maximise their sporting potential.
The tournament also attracted community leaders, football enthusiasts, coaches and residents despite the early morning drizzle.
Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Chapter, Hon. Saheed Animashaun, commended Atewogboye for championing grassroots sports development, describing the initiative as one that complements Governor Sanwo-Olu’s youth empowerment agenda.
On the pitch, Dosunmu Street defeated Ariyibi Oke Street on penalties after both sides played out a draw in regulation time.
Popoola Street edged Adeyemo Street 2-1, while Amusa Street secured a 3-1 victory. Olorunishola Street also claimed a 3-1 win over Arowojobe Street.
Sponsored by the Lagos State Government and First Bank Nigeria Plc, the Lagos Street Soccer Stars Season 2 will run until August 15,and 2026, with organisers hoping to uncover the next generation of football stars from the grassroots.
