Perfect D’Tigers Crush Rwanda, Top of Group C to Reach FIBA World Cup Qualifiers Second Round in Style
Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, ended the first round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers in emphatic fashion with a commanding 106-62 victory over Rwanda on Sunday at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda in Angola.
The dominant display capped a flawless qualifying window two for Nigeria, who won all three matches in Luanda to secure qualification for the second round while finishing top of Group C by winning out of the six matches played in window 1 and 2.
Coached by David Fizdale, D’Tigers had earlier edged Tunisia 84-81 before recording another narrow 80-79 victory over Guinea, completing a perfect 3-0 sweep during the July qualifying window.
Against Rwanda, Nigeria produced one of their most complete performances of the campaign, controlling the contest from the opening tip-off with relentless defence, fast-break efficiency and sharp shooting.
The victory saw D’Tigers surpass the 100-point mark while limiting Rwanda to just 62 points.
Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu led the offensive charge with 17 points and seven assists, orchestrating Nigeria’s attack throughout the game. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu, and Stan Okoye each added 13 points as D’Tigers showcased their depth and balance.

The results ensured Nigeria finished first in Group C with 10 points from six games, ahead of Guinea and Tunisia, while Rwanda finished bottom of the group.
What’s Next?
By finishing among the top three teams in Group C, Nigeria advances to the Second Round of the African Qualifiers, where they will be joined by the top 3 teams from Group A.
The teams carry forward their first-round results and will play six additional games across two qualifying windows.
At the end of the second round, five African nations will qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
With three consecutive victories and renewed confidence under Fizdale, D’Tigers have firmly re-established themselves as one of Africa’s strongest contenders as they continue their quest for a place at the global showpiece.
