NPFL Reveals Kick-Off Date for 2026/27 Season Amid Landmark Financial Reforms

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially unveiled the calendar for the 2026/27 season, with the new campaign scheduled to kick off between August 28 and 30, 2026, as part of a broader effort to strengthen the structure and commercial appeal of Nigerian football.

The season is expected to conclude on May 30, 2027, following a 38-match schedule that also accommodates the President Federation Cup and international football commitments.

Clubs are required to complete player registration by August 22, while the first transfer window will run from July 15 to September 14, 2026.

According to the released calendar, the first half of the season will end in December before a short mid-season break, with league action resuming in January 2027.

The January transfer window will allow clubs to strengthen their squads for the second half of the campaign.

Beyond the schedule, the 2026/27 season will usher in a new financial era for Nigerian club football.

Following a joint meeting involving the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the NPFL, and club owners, league champions will receive a record ₦1 billion in prize money—the largest winner’s purse in the history of the competition.

The runners-up will earn ₦500 million, while the third-placed club will receive ₦300 million as part of a historic ₦2.5 billion prize fund.

The remaining clubs will also receive graded financial rewards based on their final league positions, a move designed to improve competitiveness, club sustainability, and player welfare.

Defending champions Enugu Rangers will begin the new campaign aiming to retain the title they secured last season, while newly promoted Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United prepare for life in Nigeria’s top flight.

League organisers believe the early release of the calendar and the unprecedented financial incentives will provide clubs with greater certainty for planning while enhancing the professionalism and commercial value of the NPFL ahead of what promises to be a landmark campaign.
