40 Year Old Vozinha Stars as Debutants Cape Verde Hold Spain in Atlanta

World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far after holding European champions Spain to a dramatic goalless draw in Atlanta on Monday night.

Few gave the Blue Sharks any chance against a star-studded Spanish side ranked second in the world, but the African underdogs delivered a disciplined and fearless performance to claim a famous point in their opening Group H clash.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha emerged as the hero for Cape Verde with a string of outstanding saves that frustrated Spain throughout the encounter.

The 40-year-old shot stopper produced crucial interventions to deny Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte and Mikel Oyarzabal as Spain struggled to find a breakthrough.

Spain dominated possession and registered 27 shots, but only seven efforts tested Vozinha, who inspired Cape Verde with his calm leadership and commanding presence in goal.

Ferran Torres came closest to scoring in the first half after connecting with Marc Cucurella’s header across the box, only to hit the crossbar under pressure from the experienced goalkeeper.

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal made his long-awaited return from injury in the second half, appearing for the first time since April.

His introduction injected energy into Spain’s attack, while Nico Williams also returned to action, but Cape Verde’s compact defensive structure continued to frustrate the favourites.

Cape Verde nearly produced an even greater shock late in the match when Diney Borges met a corner with a powerful header, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon reacted well to keep the effort out.
The result marked a historic moment for Cape Verde, one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup.

Ranked 67th in the FIFA rankings before the tournament, the African side showcased remarkable resilience and organisation against one of the competition favourites.

Their famous draw also boosts hopes of becoming the first African World Cup debutants to reach the knockout stage since Ghana achieved the feat in 2006.
For Spain, the stalemate continues a trend of difficult World Cup openers.

Despite entering the tournament among the favourites, Luis de la Fuente’s side struggled to break down Cape Verde’s disciplined defence and will now face increased pressure heading into their next group game.

Spain will remain in Atlanta to face Saudi Arabia in their second Group H match, while Cape Verde travel to Miami to take on Uruguay.
