Edo Queens’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League were dashed on Thursday after Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies secured a 1–0 victory in the additional 30 minutes ordered to resolve their disputed WAFU B final, winning 3–2 on aggregate in Cairo, Egypt.
Mohammed Afishata scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute to hand Ampem Darkoa the regional title and secure their place in the continental competition, scheduled to take place in Cairo from November 1 to 15.
The outcome brings an end to Edo Queens’ ambition of making a second appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League, following their debut at the 2024 edition in Morocco.
The additional period was played to settle the controversy surrounding the original WAFU B Women’s Champions League final, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in September.
Edo Queens had initially been declared winners after a 4–3 penalty shootout victory, following a 2–2 draw in regulation time. However, the match referee proceeded directly to penalties without playing the scheduled extra time.
Following the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) acknowledged the refereeing error and directed that the outstanding 30 minutes of extra time be played before any penalty shootout, if required.
The teams reconvened in Cairo on Thursday to complete the fixture, with Ampem Darkoa capitalising on the opportunity to overturn the original outcome and emerge as champions of the WAFU B qualifying tournament.
The Ghanaian champions will now represent the WAFU B zone at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, where they have been drawn in Group B alongside Moroccan giants AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies and Mali’s US FAS Bamako.
The continental tournament will bring together the qualified regional representatives in Cairo, with matches scheduled to run from November 1 to 15.
