Ghana and Venezuela delivered contrasting knockout victories on Wednesday to secure their places in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, eliminating Argentina and Germany respectively.
Ghana edged Argentina 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, while Venezuela stunned European heavyweights Germany with a narrow 1-0 victory to launch their campaign for a place in the last eight.
The results provided an exciting start to the Round of 16, with Ghana displaying resilience after going down to 10 players and Venezuela holding firm against a German side that had won all three of its group-stage matches.
Ghana Survive Late Argentina Fightback
Jessica Appiah proved decisive for Ghana, scoring in the first half before converting the winning penalty to send the West Africans into the quarter-finals.
Appiah broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, finishing off an assist from Cynthia Obinsrewuo at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
Argentina pushed for an equaliser, with Mercedes Diz striking the crossbar as the South Americans sought a way back into the contest. Ghana also had a second goal ruled out for offside after Obinsrewuo raced onto a long pass and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Bianca Virga.
Ghana’s challenge intensified when Hajara Adam received a second yellow card with 13 minutes remaining, leaving her side to defend its advantage with 10 players.
Argentina eventually took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 86th minute, when Diz rose to meet a looping free-kick and headed home to force a penalty shootout.
However, Ghana maintained their composure from the spot, converting all five attempts. Argentina’s Oriana Gomez missed her kick, leaving Appiah to score the decisive penalty in a 5-4 shootout triumph.
Appiah was subsequently named Player of the Match for her match-winning contribution.
Venezuela Stun Unbeaten Germany
Venezuela produced one of the standout results of the knockout stage, defeating Germany 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Diana Bravo scored the only goal of the encounter in the fifth minute, punishing Germany after the Europeans failed to clear a cross delivered from the right by Karla Alfonzo.
The early breakthrough proved decisive as Venezuela frustrated their opponents for the remainder of the match.
Germany entered the knockout stage with a perfect group-stage record, having won all three of their matches, but struggled to translate their dominance into goals against a disciplined Venezuelan defence.
Venezuela, meanwhile, had reached the Round of 16 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after recording one victory and two defeats in the group stage.
Juneski Flores was named Player of the Match following Venezuela’s impressive victory.

Nigeria’s Flamingos will return to action on Thursday, October 29, when they face Mexico at 4pm Nigerian time, with a quarter-final place at stake.
The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is being hosted by Morocco, with the final scheduled for November 7.
Ghana and Venezuela will now await the completion of the Round of 16 to discover their opponents in the quarter-finals.
