NPFL Week 4: Rangers, Rivers United Return to Domestic Wins as Tough Away Tests Await
The 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) returns to full Matchday 4 action this weekend, with Rangers International and Rivers United heading into demanding away fixtures after contrasting experiences in the CAF Champions League.
Both clubs endured difficult moments on the continental stage, but have responded with victories on their return to domestic action, setting up an intriguing weekend as the NPFL campaign gathers momentum.
Rivers United were the first to bounce back.
The Pride of Rivers defeated Warri Wolves 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday, with Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai opening the scoring in the 22nd minute before substitute Chinemerem Ugwueze added the second in the 75th minute.
The result maintained Rivers United’s perfect start to their domestic campaign and provided an immediate response to their CAF Champions League disappointment.
Rivers United had exited the Champions League at the first preliminary-round stage after FC San Pedro held them to a 2-2 draw in Uyo to progress 3-3 on aggregate on the away-goals rule.
The Nigerian side had fallen two goals behind inside the opening 20 minutes before Chijioke Mbaoma’s penalty and Douglas Iyowuna’s second-half equaliser gave them hope, but San Pedro held on to advance.
Rivers United now face another stern examination when they travel to Lafia to meet Nasarawa United on Sunday.
Rangers Finally Get Domestic Victory
Defending champions Rangers International have also had a demanding opening to the season.
The Flying Antelopes survived their CAF Champions League first-round tie against Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap, advancing 5-4 on penalties after both legs ended 1-1.
The result kept Rangers in the competition and left them as Nigeria’s only remaining representative in the CAF Champions League following Rivers United’s elimination.
Their domestic campaign, however, started slowly.
Rangers opened their title defence with a 1-1 draw against Katsina United before their Matchday 3 fixture against Nasarawa United was completed this week.
The champions eventually secured their first league victory, coming from behind to defeat Nasarawa United 2-1.
The result gives Rangers renewed momentum ahead of Sunday’s trip to Owerri, where they will face Kun Khalifat FC.
Tough Assignments Await
Rangers’ meeting with Kun Khalifat will be one of the weekend’s fixtures to watch as the champions attempt to build on their first domestic victory.
Rivers United, meanwhile, face Nasarawa United in Lafia knowing that another win would strengthen their perfect start to the NPFL campaign.
Shooting Stars also face a difficult assignment away to Plateau United in Jos, while early-season leaders Doma United put their perfect record on the line against Kano Pillars.
Doma have won their opening three matches, including a 2-0 victory over Enyimba in their previous outing, and will be looking to maintain that run in Kano.
Sporting Lagos will host Abia Warriors after recording their first win of the campaign with a 3-0 victory over Inter Lagos, while Enyimba will seek a response when they welcome Inter Lagos to Aba.

With continental football temporarily behind them, Rangers and Rivers United now return to the domestic front with contrasting objectives: the champions will look to build consistency after a slow start, while Rivers United will attempt to maintain their perfect league record.
For both clubs, however, Matchday 4 offers another test of how quickly they can recover from the demands and disappointment of continental competition and translate that experience into sustained NPFL form.
