Carabao Cup: Arsenal, Liverpool Advance as Manchester United Face Brighton Test

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup campaign takes centre stage on Wednesday as Brighton & Hove Albion visit Old Trafford, with Arsenal and Liverpool already safely through to the fourth round after impressive victories on Tuesday night.

The third round of the Carabao Cup is beginning to take shape, but attention now turns to Manchester United, who face a Brighton side capable of making life uncomfortable for Michael Carrick’s team.

United return to action only days after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the derby, giving Carrick an immediate opportunity to demand a response from his squad when Brighton arrive at Old Trafford.

The Carabao Cup also offers United the chance to build momentum during an uneven start to the Premier League campaign, although Brighton’s attacking form means the hosts will have little room for complacency.

Brighton have already demonstrated their offensive capabilities this season, including a 5-0 victory over Coventry City and a 4-0 win against Aston Villa. Their 13 goals from the opening four league matches underline the threat facing United.

There is also recent history between the clubs to consider.

Brighton eliminated United from the FA Cup at Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory in January before United responded with a 3-0 win at the Amex in May. The contrasting results illustrate the increasingly competitive nature of this fixture.

For Carrick, Wednesday’s contest could also provide an opportunity to rotate his squad and assess players who have had limited minutes, particularly with United’s Premier League commitments continuing.

The manager must nevertheless find the right balance between rotation and maintaining enough experience to overcome a Brighton team that has shown it can punish defensive lapses.

United’s early-season form has increased the importance of every opportunity to establish consistency. After victories over Ipswich Town and a draw against Everton were followed by defeats to Hull City and Manchester City, progression in the Carabao Cup would provide another competitive fixture in which Carrick can assess his team’s development.

Arsenal and Liverpool through

Arsenal provided one of the major talking points on Tuesday, defeating Ipswich Town 4-2 away from home.

The Gunners were inspired by 16-year-old Max Dowman, who scored twice in an impressive display as Mikel Arteta’s side booked their place in the next round.

Liverpool also advanced with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool control before Tottenham reduced the deficit. Dominik Szoboszlai then sealed the victory with a late strike.

Fulham, Brentford and Peterborough United also progressed.

Fulham edged West Ham United 3-2 in a five-goal London derby, Brentford defeated Reading 2-1, while Peterborough survived a six-goal thriller against Barnsley, eventually winning 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

United and Brighton in focus

With Arsenal and Liverpool already through, Manchester United now face the task of securing their own place in the last 16.

The match comes at a significant moment for Carrick, whose side need greater consistency while managing injuries and the demands of a congested schedule.

Brighton, meanwhile, will arrive with confidence and an attacking identity that could test United’s defensive organisation.

The stakes are straightforward: win and advance, lose and the pressure surrounding United’s start to the season intensifies.

The fourth-round draw is scheduled to take place immediately after Wednesday’s Manchester United-Brighton tie, adding another layer of anticipation to a fixture that could prove far more demanding than its cup billing suggests.
