‘Massive Turnaround’ The Numbers, Stats Behind D’Tigers’ Qualification as Nigeria Edge Guinea by One Point
Nigeria’s D’Tigers have officially booked their place in the second phase of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after edging Group C leaders Guinea 80-79 in a thrilling encounter on Friday.
The dramatic one-point victory not only revived Nigeria’s campaign but mathematically secured qualification with one group match still to play.
With the win, D’Tigers moved to eight points from five matches (three wins and two defeats), opening an unassailable four-point gap over bottom-placed Rwanda, who remain on four points after four games.
Since Rwanda can only reach a maximum of six points with one game remaining, Nigeria are guaranteed to finish inside the top three in Group C and progress to the next stage of the qualifiers.
Guinea remain top of the standings with nine points despite suffering their first defeat of the campaign, while Tunisia occupy third place with six points from four matches.
D’Tigers Complete Remarkable Comeback
Nigeria made a bright start, winning the opening quarter 23-17 before both sides shared the second period 23-23 to give D’Tigers a 46-40 halftime advantage.
Guinea responded strongly after the break, dominating the third quarter 28-16 to overturn the deficit and take a six-point lead into the final period.
However, D’Tigers refused to surrender.
Led by a composed offensive display and a disciplined defensive effort, Nigeria outscored Guinea 18-11 in the fourth quarter to seal a memorable 80-79 victory.
Free Throws Decide the Contest
Although Guinea enjoyed slightly better shooting percentages from both the field and three-point range, Nigeria’s efficiency from the free-throw line proved decisive.
