2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Fall in Bissau as Guinea-Bissau Take Charge of Group L

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a damaging setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after Guinea-Bissau secured a commanding 3–0 victory in their Group L clash at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Tuesday.

The result gives Guinea-Bissau a firm grip on the group after two rounds of matches, while Nigeria are left with three points from their opening two fixtures and significant ground to recover in the remaining stages of the qualification campaign.

Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló were on target for the Djurtus as they followed up their opening-day 2–0 victory over Tanzania with another impressive performance against one of Africa’s traditional football powers.

Guinea-Bissau made their intentions clear from the outset and were rewarded in the 15th minute.

Renato Nhaga found Djú with a well-timed pass into the Nigerian penalty area, allowing the forward to create space before firing a left-footed effort beyond Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria struggled to establish the attacking rhythm that had helped them overcome Madagascar 2–1 in their opening fixture four days earlier.

Alex Iwobi did create a promising opportunity for Ademola Lookman before the interval, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Fernando Embadjé reacted sharply to keep out the Nigerian forward’s effort.

The hosts therefore carried their 1–0 advantage into half-time, leaving Éric Chelle’s side needing a significant improvement after the restart.

Instead, Guinea-Bissau extended their advantage in the 66th minute.

Mama Baldé finished decisively to make it 2–0 and place the hosts firmly in control of the contest.

Nigeria attempted to respond, but the Super Eagles found it difficult to break through a disciplined Guinea-Bissau defence, while Embadjé continued to provide security behind the home side’s backline.

George Ilenikhena came close to pulling one back late in the match, but Embadjé produced another important save to preserve the hosts’ two-goal cushion.

Guinea-Bissau then put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló found the net to complete a comprehensive 3–0 victory.

The defeat is particularly significant because of the unusual qualification structure in Group L.

Tanzania, one of the three co-hosts of AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Uganda, are already guaranteed a place at the finals. CAF’s regulations therefore mean that only the highest-ranked team among the other three nations in Group L will qualify.

Guinea-Bissau began the campaign with a 2–0 away victory over Tanzania, before Nigeria recovered from conceding early to defeat Madagascar 2–1. The Djurtus have now followed that result with another victory, putting them on six points and giving them the early advantage in the qualification race.

For Nigeria, the challenge now becomes one of recovery.

The Super Eagles will have another four group matches to improve their position, with the next qualification window scheduled for November before the final two rounds take place in March 2027.

Chelle’s side will also have to address the attacking and defensive issues exposed in Bissau. Nigeria entered the qualifying campaign without injured striker Victor Osimhen, whose absence had already been confirmed for both opening fixtures.

Tuesday’s defeat does not decide the qualification race, but it has substantially altered its complexion.

Guinea-Bissau have taken maximum points from their opening two matches and now sit at the summit of Group L, while Nigeria must regroup quickly if they are to reclaim the initiative in the race for the lone qualification ticket available to the non-host teams.
