2026 WAFCON: Super Falcons Defender Ashley Plumptre Reacts As Madugu Releases Nigeria Squad

Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre has shared an emotional message after missing out on the Super Falcons squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to injury.

Plumtre urged Nigerians to rally behind the team as they begin the defence of their continental title in Morocco.

Head coach Justine Madugu omitted the Leicester City defender from his 25-player squad after she failed to recover in time for the tournament, bringing an end to her hopes of featuring at another WAFCON.

Reacting to the news on social media, Plumptre admitted she was heartbroken but insisted she is prioritising her recovery while pledging her full support to her teammates.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening.”

“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.”

“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you.”

“I am with you ladies, Naija no dey carry last.”
Plumptre was one of Nigeria’s standout performers during the Super Falcons’ triumphant 2025 WAFCON campaign and her absence is a significant blow to the team’s defensive options.

Madugu’s squad is led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade and includes first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, experienced defender Osinachi Ohale, midfielders Jennifer Echegini, Christy Ucheibe and Halimatu Ayinde, as well as six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala.

Also selected are Michelle Alozie, Oluwatosin Demehin, Toni Payne, Deborah Abiodun, Gift Monday, Esther Okoronkwo, Francisca Ordega, Omorinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Uchenna Kanu and several other key members of the defending champions.

Nigeria, Africa’s most successful women’s national team with 10 WAFCON titles, have been drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and tournament debutants Malawi, with all their group-stage matches scheduled to take place in Rabat.

The 2026 WAFCON will run from July 26 to August 16 in Morocco and will feature 16 nations for the first time in the competition’s history.

The four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, while the fifth-placed team will earn a place in the intercontinental playoffs.

The Super Falcons head into the tournament chasing an unprecedented 11th African title after their dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in last year’s final.
