The University of Calabar (UNICAL) and the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) have officially unveiled OMON the Gorilla as the mascot of the 28th NUGA Games, scheduled to take place from November 14 to 24, 2026, in Calabar, Cross River State.
Inspired by the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla, OMON symbolizes strength, resilience, unity, excellence, and determination—qualities that reflect the aspirations of student-athletes across Nigeria.
The unveiling marks another significant milestone in preparations for the Games, which have been branded the “Paradise Games” in recognition of Cross River State’s rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, tourism potential, and environmental significance.
OMON will serve as the official face of the Games, featuring prominently in promotional campaigns, community outreach programmes, volunteer engagements, and educational initiatives aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong, assured participating institutions of adequate security and safety throughout the competition.
He stated that the university would work closely with security agencies to ensure a secure environment for athletes, officials, and visitors during the Games.
Professor Offiong also highlighted the expected social and economic impact of the event, noting that NUGA 2026 would further position Cross River State as a leading destination for sports tourism while showcasing its commitment to environmental conservation.
According to the organisers, the 28th NUGA Games are expected to attract approximately 95 universities and more than 10,000 athletes, coaches, sports administrators, volunteers, and spectators from across the country.
Participants will compete in 24 sporting events, making the competition one of the largest university sports festivals in Nigeria.
The University of Calabar has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development, talent discovery, and infrastructure enhancement as preparations intensify for the prestigious national university games.
