2026 FIFA World Cup: Canada Rally to Earn Historic First World Cup Point Against Bosnia-Herzegovina

Co-hosts Canada fought back to secure a historic 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening Group B match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Toronto Stadium on Friday night.

Substitute Cyle Larin emerged the hero for the Canadians after scoring just 121 seconds following his introduction, helping Jesse Marsch’s side claim the country’s first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup finals.

Bosnia-Herzegovina stunned the packed Toronto crowd by taking the lead in the 21st minute through Jovo Lukic. The forward rose highest to head home after Sead Kolasinac flicked on Ivan Basic’s corner kick.

Canada responded strongly and created several chances before the break, with Jonathan David, Stephen Eustaquio, and Nigerian-born forward Tani Oluwaseyi all going close for the hosts.

The Canadians intensified the pressure in the second half and nearly equalised when Richie Laryea’s effort looked destined for the net, only for former Arsenal defender Kolasinac to produce a remarkable goal-line clearance that deflected the ball onto the crossbar.

Oluwaseyi also came close to writing his name into Canadian football history, but Nikola Katic cleared his powerful header off the line as Bosnia desperately defended their advantage.

Canada eventually found the breakthrough in the 78th minute after Marsch introduced Larin. The Southampton striker brilliantly spun away from Tarik Muharemovic before firing a shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj with the aid of a slight deflection.

The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the 43,002-capacity Toronto Stadium as Canada avoided defeat at the World Cup for the very first time, having previously lost all three matches in 1986 and all three games during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The entertaining encounter showcased Canada’s attacking quality and resilience in front of their home supporters as they continue their quest to progress from what many consider one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

Canada will now turn attention to their next Group B fixture against Qatar on June 18 before facing Switzerland on June 24.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, who reached the tournament through dramatic playoff victories over Wales and Italy, settled for a point despite an impressive defensive display for much of the contest.

Larin was named Player of the Match following his decisive impact from the bench.
