LSFA Expels Two Teams, Hands Out Suspensions Over Violence at Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup
The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) has announced a series of disciplinary measures following violent incidents that marred the Round of 16 matches of the 2026 Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup on Friday, June 26.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dele Gbajumo, the association expressed deep disappointment over the events, stressing that the tournament is designed to promote friendship, discipline, sportsmanship, and respect among Nigeria’s football legends while inspiring the next generation of players.
FC Omoruyi and FC Obafemi Expelled
The most serious incident occurred during the second-leg Round of 16 clash between FC Omoruyi and FC Obafemi at St. Jude’s Primary School, where the match was abandoned in the 80th minute after violent clashes involving supporters of both teams.
Following a review of preliminary reports, the LSFA concluded that the unrest was caused by supporters of both clubs.
The association also confirmed that match officials were neither attacked nor threatened, indicating that the disturbance was not related to officiating decisions.
As a result, the Disciplinary Committee ruled that:
FC Omoruyi and FC Obafemi have been expelled from the 2026 Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup in line with Article 4 of the tournament framework.
Both clubs have been banned from participating in the competition for the next three years, effective immediately.
FC Dominic Suspended for Two Years
The LSFA also sanctioned FC Dominic after the team’s officials instructed players to walk off the pitch at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, following the award of a penalty to FC Babington.
The committee imposed a two-year suspension on the team from the competition, stating that the decision was necessary to protect the integrity and reputation of the tournament.
The association emphasized that while football is driven by passion, violence and acts of indiscipline have no place in the game.
Warning Issued to FC Nieketien
The Organising Committee also reviewed reports from the Round of 16 fixture between FC Udeze and FC Nieketien at Navy Barracks, Ajegunle.
According to the committee, repeated calls urging the referee to “open the match” were made during the encounter.
Although the intent behind the remarks could not be conclusively determined, the LSFA noted that such comments could place undue pressure on match officials and inflame tensions.
Consequently, FC Nieketien and all individuals associated with the club have been issued a strong warning.
The association warned that any future conduct capable of intimidating officials, provoking opponents, or inciting spectators would attract severe disciplinary sanctions.
LSFA Calls for Discipline
The association reminded all participating Ex-Internationals that they remain ambassadors of Nigerian football and are expected to uphold the values of professionalism, leadership, and sportsmanship both on and off the pitch.
The LSFA further stressed that the continued success of the Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup depends on the discipline and conduct of every stakeholder, including players, officials, adopted clubs, supporters, and football legends.
The statement also noted that the Bet9ja Foundation is under no obligation to continue sponsoring the competition in future editions, adding that continued support will depend on the tournament’s organization, discipline, and positive impact on the sponsor’s brand.
The association warned that acts of violence, misconduct, and indiscipline not only damage the reputation of the competition but also jeopardize opportunities for young footballers who look up to the participating legends for inspiration.
Reaffirming its commitment to football excellence, unity, respect, and fair play, the LSFA stated that it would continue to impose appropriate sanctions on any individual or team whose actions threaten the integrity of the competition.
The statement concluded by thanking participating teams and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation in maintaining the highest standards of discipline throughout the tournament.
