Algeria boosted their chances of reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after coming from behind to defeat Jordan 2-1 in a thrilling Group J encounter at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Tuesday.
The Desert Foxes overturned a first-half deficit to secure all three points, while the defeat officially ended Jordan’s hopes of progressing from the tournament.
Jordan stunned their North African opponents in the 36th minute when midfielder Nizar Al Rashdan curled a fine effort into the net after capitalizing on a costly turnover by Algeria’s midfield.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Algeria struggled to break down Jordan’s disciplined defence during the opening period and went into halftime trailing 1-0.
The Algerians increased the pressure after the restart and were rewarded in the 69th minute. Striker Nadhir Benbouali rose highest to head home a well-delivered corner from veteran winger Riyad Mahrez, bringing the scores level.
With momentum firmly on their side, Algeria completed the turnaround eight minutes from time.
Another dangerous corner caused problems in the Jordanian penalty area, allowing Amine Gouiri to react quickest and hook the ball home for the winning goal.
Jordan had defended resolutely for much of the contest and threatened on the counterattack through captain Mousa Al Tamari, but they were ultimately unable to withstand Algeria’s sustained pressure.
The victory moves Algeria into third place in Group J and keeps their qualification hopes alive heading into their final group match against Austria national football team.
Jordan, meanwhile, remain bottom of the group without a point and will conclude their campaign against group leaders Argentina national football team.
Algeria’s resilience and set-piece effectiveness proved decisive, ensuring their World Cup journey remains alive as the race for the knockout rounds intensifies.
