Canice Abua and Etoro Mfonobong Bassey were crowned men’s and women’s singles champions respectively at the 47th Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior National Open Tennis Championship, which concluded on Saturday at the National Tennis Centre, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Top seed Canice Abua produced a dominant display in the men’s singles final, defeating defending champion Michael Emmanuel 6-1, 6-2 to secure his first-ever CBN Open title.

Abua remained in complete control despite a brief rain interruption, overpowering Emmanuel with a blend of consistency and aggressive shot-making to end the champion’s reign in convincing fashion.
In the women’s singles final, Etoro Bassey showcased remarkable resilience to claim her maiden CBN Open crown.

The GEUF Tennis Academy star rallied from a set down to defeat Success Ogunjobi 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 in an entertaining contest.
After dropping a closely contested opening set, Bassey responded emphatically by dominating the second set before maintaining her momentum to seal victory in the decider.

Ogunjobi, however, found consolation in the women’s doubles event, teaming up with top seed Khadijat Mohammed to capture the title. The duo defeated Etoro Bassey and Favour James 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-6 in a thrilling final.

The 47th edition of the championship featured a total prize purse of ₦13.1 million across various categories. The men’s singles event offered ₦4.7 million, while the women’s singles division carried ₦3.1 million in prize money, with both singles champions receiving ₦1 million each.

In the wheelchair tennis category, Andrea Usoh captured the women’s singles title with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chituru Nwazuzu, earning her first CBN championship title after ten years of participation.

Alex Adewale successfully defended his men’s wheelchair singles crown, defeating Rasaq Bankole 6-0, 6-1 to reaffirm his dominance in Nigerian wheelchair tennis.

The annual championship once again highlighted the depth of talent in Nigerian tennis, providing a competitive stage for both established stars and emerging players across conventional and wheelchair divisions.
