Bendel Insurance have formally petitioned the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over the circumstances surrounding Enugu Rangers’ controversial winning goal in their 1-0 victory over the Benin Arsenal in Wednesday’s Matchday 9 encounter at the Awka City Stadium.
The Benin-based club is challenging the decision to allow Rangers’ goal to stand despite an apparent displacement of the goalpost’s crossbar during the attacking move that led to the decisive strike.
In a club statement dated November 5, 2026, Bendel Insurance explained that the incident occurred shortly after the restart of the second half, when the crossbar became displaced. However, play was not stopped, allowing Rangers to continue their attack and score what proved to be the only goal of the contest in the 47th minute.
Bendel Insurance argued that the match officials failed to apply the relevant provisions of the Laws of the Game, particularly IFAB Law 1.10.
According to the club, requires play to be stopped when a goalpost or crossbar becomes displaced or broken until the equipment is repaired or replaced.
The club maintains that the referee should have immediately halted the game when the goalframe was displaced and that the resulting goal should not have been allowed to stand because the crossbar was not in its proper position.
It further contends that the incident goes beyond a routine refereeing judgment or factual decision, describing it as a misapplication of the Laws of the Game.
Bendel Insurance, posited that the significance of the incident is heightened by the fact that the goal determined the outcome of the match, raising concerns about competitive fairness and the integrity of the league.
The club also challenged the possible application of the finality provision under Law 5.2, arguing that the protection afforded to refereeing decisions should not apply where, in its interpretation, a mandatory provision of the Laws of the Game has not been correctly implemented.
However, Bendel Insurance was careful to distinguish its petition from an allegation of deliberate misconduct against the match officials.
The club described its action as a formal challenge to the application of the rules, stressing that player safety, competitive fairness and the credibility of the NPFL must remain central to the administration of the competition.
The petition places the spotlight on the match officials’ handling of the incident and the NPFL’s response to the protest, with the disputed goal having a direct bearing on the outcome of the Matchday 9 fixture.
