Jane Ijirigho: The 16-Save Goalkeeping Wall Keeping Flamingos’ World Cup Dream Alive Ahead of Brazil Clash

Nigeria’s Flamingos will look to goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho for another commanding performance when they face Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the shot-stopper emerging as one of the standout performers in the country’s campaign.

Ijirigho has recorded 16 saves in the tournament, an impressive contribution that underlines her importance to Nigeria’s progress and makes her one of the key figures behind the Flamingos’ continued presence in the competition.

Her interventions have provided Nigeria with crucial defensive assurance at decisive moments, helping the team navigate difficult spells and remain in contention for a historic place in the final.

The 16-save tally has also earned her recognition from FIFA, which highlighted her importance to Nigeria’s qualification for the last four. Her performances against Puerto Rico and Mexico were particularly noteworthy, with the 1.92-metre goalkeeper producing important interventions to deny opponents at critical moments.

Against Mexico in the Round of 16, Ijirigho made a crucial early stop to deny captain Citlalli Reyes before brilliantly tipping Kemberly Garcia’s powerful long-range effort onto the crossbar. Those interventions helped Nigeria secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the quarter-finals.

FIFA also identified Ijirigho as the tallest player at the tournament, an attribute that has complemented her impressive shot-stopping ability and commanding presence in goal. FIFA +1

Ijirigho Credits Teamwork for Her Performances

Speaking about her contribution to the Flamingos’ campaign, Ijirigho was quick to acknowledge the collective effort behind Nigeria’s progress, insisting that every player has a responsibility to fulfil.

“I would say it is teamwork because everybody has their own part to play. I will do my part as a goalkeeper, while the other players will do theirs.

“I am very happy that I have been able to do my part this far. I have done what I know how to do best and ensured that I stay calm within the group,” she said.

Confident of Beating Brazil

With Brazil standing between Nigeria and a place in the final, the goalkeeper believes the Flamingos have the quality and determination to overcome the South Americans.

Brazil have been unbeaten in Morocco and possess considerable attacking threat, particularly through Greise Kelly, who has contributed three goals and five assists.

However, Ijirigho is confident that Nigeria can rise to the occasion if they maintain their current momentum, adhere to the coaches’ instructions and approach the encounter with the right mentality.

“If we keep up with the same momentum, listen to our coaches, do what we know how to do best and maintain the same mindset, I think we will be able to get past Brazil,” she added.

The semi-final, scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, presents the Flamingos with an opportunity to reach their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final.

Nigeria have previously reached the semi-finals, finishing third at the 2022 edition in India. A victory over Brazil would take Hakeem Busari’s side into uncharted territory and put them within touching distance of a maiden world title.

For Ijirigho, another outstanding performance could prove decisive. With 16 saves already to her name, the Nigerian goalkeeper will once again be expected to stand tall as the Flamingos pursue a historic breakthrough.
