Warri Wolves Docked Three Points as NPFL Sanctions Katsina United, Abia Warriors Over Security Breaches

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed fines, points and goals deductions, stadium restrictions and suspensions on Warri Wolves, Katsina United and Abia Warriors following security breaches and misconduct during their respective Matchday 10 fixtures.

The disciplinary measures followed incidents involving inadequate matchday security, unauthorised access to restricted areas, pitch encroachment, assault on a match official and alleged interference with a live broadcast.

Warri Wolves Docked Three Points, Face Three Home Games Behind Closed Doors

Warri Wolves have received the heaviest punishment after a supporter assaulted a match official following their match against Kano Pillars on Sunday.

According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised persons to access restricted areas. A supporter subsequently assaulted the appointed match officials, leaving the second assistant referee with a nose injury and bleeding.

The Delta-based club was fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security and another ₦2 million for the assault on the match official.

Warri Wolves must also pay ₦250,000 in compensation to the affected assistant referee for medical treatment.

Beyond the financial penalties, the NPFL ordered the deduction of three points and three goals from the club’s accrued tally for the assault and injury inflicted on the assistant referee.

The club will also play its next three home matches behind closed doors.

The league further directed Warri Wolves to identify and produce the individual responsible for the assault and provide evidence of the person’s prosecution within seven days.

The club has 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the sanctions.

Katsina United Fined ₦2m for Security Failure, Pitch Encroachment

Katsina United have been fined ₦2 million following security breaches during their match against Plateau United on Sunday.

The NPFL charged the club with failing to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas.

Katsina United supporters also encroached onto the field of play, compromising the safety of players and match officials.

The club was fined ₦1 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security and another ₦1 million for the pitch encroachment.

Katsina United have 48 hours, equivalent to two working days as stated in the notice, to appeal the sanctions.

Abia Warriors Fined ₦3m, Multimedia Officer Suspended

Abia Warriors have been fined ₦3 million and their multimedia officer suspended for five matches following incidents during their Matchday 10 fixture against Niger Tornadoes on Sunday.

The NPFL accused the Umuahia-based club of failing to provide adequate security as agreed at the pre-match technical meeting.

The league also alleged that a club official attempted to disrupt the live broadcast by harassing a crew member of the league’s broadcast partner.

Abia Warriors were fined ₦1 million for the security failure and another ₦2 million for the alleged attempt to disrupt the live broadcast.

The club must also pay ₦250,000 in compensation to the affected broadcast crew member for medical treatment of the injury sustained during the incident.

In a further disciplinary measure, Abia Warriors multimedia officer, Chidera Favour Igwe, was suspended from all NPFL activities for five matches, covering both home and away fixtures, over his alleged involvement in the broadcast disruption and harassment of the crew member.

The club has 48 hours, as specified in the disciplinary notice, to appeal the sanctions.

NPFL Enforces Matchday Security Rules

The latest sanctions reinforce the NPFL’s position on matchday security, the safety of players and officials, and the protection of broadcast personnel and operations.

Warri Wolves face a three-point and three-goal deduction, alongside three home matches without spectators. Katsina United received financial penalties for security lapses and pitch encroachment, while Abia Warriors face fines and a five-match suspension for their multimedia officer.

All three clubs retain the right to appeal within the stipulated deadlines.

The decisions form part of the NPFL’s disciplinary actions following incidents recorded during Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 season.
