The race for the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title will go down to the final day after Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens recorded crucial victories in Matchday Four of the Super Six playoffs in Port Harcourt.
Former champions Edo Queens moved to the top of the standings with nine points after edging hosts Rivers Angels 2-1 in a fiercely contested South-South derby at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
The Benin-based side opened the scoring in the 39th minute through Precious Oscar, who calmly finished to give Edo Queens a deserved lead heading into the break.
Rivers Angels responded strongly in the second half and found an equaliser in the 72nd minute when substitute Abasiofon Uwah made an instant impact off the bench.
However, Edo Queens restored their advantage just five minutes later as Chioma Moses struck decisively in the 77th minute to hand the reigning champions a massive victory in their title defence quest.
The encounter produced an intense battle between both sides, with each team registering six shots on target. Edo Queens committed 15 fouls compared to Rivers Angels’ 13, while the hosts narrowly edged the corner kicks count 3-2.
Earlier on Friday, Bayelsa Queens kept their championship hopes alive with a comfortable 2-0 victory over FC Robo Queens. Goals from Kindness Ifeanyi and substitute Ojiyovwi Kesiena sealed maximum points for the Yenagoa-based side.
In another Matchday Four fixture, Nasarawa Amazons suffered a setback in the title race after being held to a goalless draw by Abia Angels.
With one round of matches left, Edo Queens lead the standings on nine points, while Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons remain in contention with seven points each. Abia Angels, Rivers Angels, and FC Robo Queens are now mathematically out of the title race.
The Super Six playoffs will conclude on Sunday in Port Harcourt with a dramatic final day expected as three clubs battle for one trophy in what promises to be a thrilling finish to the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership season.
