WAFU B U-17: Pressure Mounts as Eaglets Face Côte d’Ivoire in Win-or-Crash-Out Encounter

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets face a decisive test of their ambitions at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Championship when they take on Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday, with victory essential to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals and qualifying for next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations alive.

The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions head into the Group B encounter in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, under pressure following their disappointing 2–1 defeat to Niger Republic in their opening match on Wednesday.

The loss leaves Nigeria without a point and with little room for error, making the clash against the Ivorians a must-win encounter for head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere and his young squad.

Côte d’Ivoire, meanwhile, have one point after drawing 1–1 with Niger, leaving the Nigerians needing all three points to secure their passage into the knockout stage.

Uwejamomere Admits Pressure, Backs Eaglets to Respond

Despite the setback against Niger, Uwejamomere has expressed confidence in his players’ ability to bounce back, insisting that the team remains in good spirits ahead of the crucial encounter.

Speaking at a press conference at Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou on Friday, the coach acknowledged the significance of the fixture while urging his players to remain composed and believe in themselves.

“We had a setback in the game against Niger Republic, but we are in great spirit to overcome it as we play Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday,” Uwejamomere said.

“It is a dicey situation. We are calm and reminding the players of how we want to play. We have analysed Côte d’Ivoire, how they play, their strengths and weaknesses.”

The coach admitted that the pressure was understandable, given the consequences of another disappointing result, but maintained that his players had the quality to deliver the victory required.

“There is just a little bit of pressure because it is a must-win game for Nigeria. So, we have to keep the players composed and believing in themselves, knowing that we can get the result we need,” he added.

Côte d’Ivoire Pose Another Tough Challenge

Uwejamomere recognises that Nigeria will face a determined opponent, describing Côte d’Ivoire as a strong side that will also be eager to make progress in the competition.

However, he challenged his players to match the Ivorians’ intensity and demonstrate the determination required to secure maximum points.

“The Ivorians are a very good side. They can fight, but we also have to fight and show them how much we want the victory. We know what we have to do to beat them. I’m confident,” the coach said.

The technical crew has reportedly assessed the Ivorians’ style of play, strengths and weaknesses as part of preparations for the encounter.

Nigeria will need to turn that analysis into an improved performance after struggling to get their campaign underway against Niger.

Lessons From Niger Defeat

The Golden Eaglets’ opening defeat exposed the need for a stronger response as they seek to avoid an early exit from the qualifying competition.

Niger took the lead through Abdoul Rasak Zada in the first half before Abdoul Rakilou extended their advantage late in the game. Mubarak Fasiu pulled one back for Nigeria in stoppage time, but the late goal was insufficient to prevent defeat.

The result leaves the Nigerians facing a difficult assignment against Côte d’Ivoire, with their attacking efficiency, defensive organisation and composure likely to be crucial to their chances.

Uwejamomere, however, has reminded his players that an opening defeat does not necessarily spell the end of their campaign.

He pointed to Nigeria’s experiences at the 2018 and 2021 editions of the WAFU B U-17 Championship, when the team lost their opening matches but recovered to qualify.

That history offers encouragement, although the Eaglets must now produce the required result on the pitch.

Eaglets Have No Margin for Error

With Niger already through to the semi-finals after collecting four points from two matches, the remaining Group B qualification place is at stake in the Nigeria–Côte d’Ivoire encounter.

A victory would take Nigeria to three points and give the Eaglets the result they need to progress, while a draw would leave them behind the Ivorians on the group standings.

For Uwejamomere’s side, the assignment is straightforward but demanding: deliver a disciplined, determined performance and secure the three points.

Nigeria’s pedigree at youth level will count for little unless the players translate their coach’s confidence into results.

The Eaglets must now rise to the occasion against Côte d’Ivoire, knowing that their response to the defeat against Niger could determine whether their quest for a place at the 2027 U-17 AFCON continues or ends in disappointment.
